Iowa State Routs UCF in Big 12 Matchup
AMES, Iowa (Interstat) — In a commanding display of defensive pressure and offensive efficiency, the Iowa State Cyclones overwhelmed the UCF Knights 87-57 in a Big 12 Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at a sold-out Hilton Coliseum.
The 17th-ranked Cyclones, improving to 17-2 overall and bouncing back from consecutive road losses, used a devastating first-half blitz to seize control. After UCF’s Riley Kugel opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, Iowa State unleashed a 25-4 run over the next eight minutes, fueled by relentless defense that forced the Knights into a flurry of early turnovers.
The most important stretch of the game came during that initial surge. Iowa State’s defense, spearheaded by the active hands of Tamin Lipsey and Joshua Jefferson, converted UCF turnovers into immediate points. Jefferson, the game’s standout performer, was instrumental in both igniting and sustaining the run. He recorded two steals and an assist during the pivotal sequence, which was capped by a Blake Buchanan free throw that gave the Cyclones a 25-7 lead with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half. UCF never recovered from the early onslaught, struggling to find any offensive rhythm against Iowa State’s swarming defense all night.
The Cyclones forced 17 UCF turnovers, converting them into 27 points, while committing only five turnovers of their own. Iowa State also dominated the glass, outrebounding the Knights 44-30, including a 13-9 edge on the offensive boards that led to 18 second-chance points.
Jefferson, a 6-foot-8 forward from Las Vegas, delivered a masterful all-around performance, finishing with 17 points and a career-high 12 assists. He orchestrated the offense with precision and added three steals. He was complemented by Milan Momcilovic, who scored a game-high 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including four 3-pointers, and blocked two shots. The Cyclones’ depth was on full display as six players scored in double figures. Killyan Toure and Jamarion Batemon each added 12 points, while Buchanan contributed 11 points and seven rebounds. Lipsey, despite scoring only five points, filled the stat sheet with six assists and a game-high four steals.
UCF, which fell to 14-4, was led by Jordan Burks and Riley Kugel, who each scored 15 points. However, the Knights shot just 36.8% from the field and a frigid 31.3% from beyond the arc. Their offensive rating of 84.0 on 68 possessions paled in comparison to Iowa State’s mark of 129.9. Themus Fulks added eight points and five assists for the Knights, who saw their two-game winning streak snapped.
Iowa State built a 44-26 halftime lead and never allowed UCF to mount a serious challenge in the second half, extending the margin to as many as 32 points. The Cyclones shot 50.8% from the field and connected on nine 3-pointers.
The victory was a emphatic response for Iowa State following road losses at Kansas and Cincinnati last week. UCF, which entered the game having won four of its last five, heads back on the road to face Colorado on Saturday. Iowa State travels to face Oklahoma State the same day.
The announced attendance was 14,267. Iowa State covered the pregame spread as a 13.5-point favorite, and the total score of 144 fell well under the over/under line of 155.5.
