Michigan Looks to Continue Dominant Season at Struggling Oregon
EUGENE, Ore. (Interstat) — The surging Michigan Wolverines, boasting one of the nation’s top records, will face a struggling Oregon Ducks squad in a nonconference men’s basketball matchup organized by the Big Ten on Saturday at Matthew Knight Arena.
Michigan (15-1) arrives in Eugene riding high after an 82-72 road victory at Washington on Wednesday. The Wolverines’ only blemish is a narrow 91-88 home loss to Wisconsin on Jan. 10. Their season has been marked by offensive explosions, including five wins of 30 or more points.
A key catalyst is sophomore center Aday Mara, who is coming off a 20-point, three-block performance against the Huskies. Over his last seven games, Mara is averaging 11.1 points, 3.1 assists and 2.6 blocks, providing a versatile interior presence.
Oregon (8-9) seeks to halt a three-game skid, most recently a 90-55 blowout loss at Nebraska on Tuesday. The Ducks are 1-4 in their last five games, with the lone win a 64-54 defensive effort at Maryland. Their season has been inconsistent, mixing decisive home wins with double-digit losses.
The Ducks will lean on guard Wei Lin, who has been a bright spot during the losing streak. He scored 23 points in an overtime loss at Rutgers on Jan. 5 and added 14 in the defeat at Nebraska. His backcourt play will be critical against Michigan’s potent attack.
Historically, this series is even at 4-4, but the teams have not met since 2018. The matchup pits Michigan’s elite efficiency — ranking in the top 10 nationally in both offensive and defensive metrics — against an Oregon team trying to rediscover its footing in front of the home crowd.
For Michigan, this game begins a challenging stretch that includes upcoming games against Indiana, Ohio State and a road trip to rival Michigan State. Oregon faces a similarly tough path, hosting Michigan State next before a trip to Washington.
Saturday’s tipoff is set for 7 p.m. PST at Matthew Knight Arena.
