UC Davis Edges UC Irvine in Tight Big West Contest

DAVIS, Calif. (Interstat) — In a game defined by runs, resilience, and razor-thin margins, the UC Davis Aggies executed a decisive final-minute stand to edge the UC Irvine Anteaters 75-72 in a pivotal Big West Conference men’s basketball clash on Saturday night at The Pavilion at ARC.

A crowd of 1,413 witnessed a contest that saw 10 ties and 12 lead changes, with neither team able to secure a double-digit advantage. The outcome ultimately hinged on a critical sequence in the final 30 seconds, where UC Davis converted pressure free throws and UC Irvine failed to get a clean look at a potential game-tying three-pointer.

The game unfolded as a stark contrast in styles. UC Irvine, which entered as a 2.5-point favorite, dominated the interior, outscoring UC Davis 34-18 in the paint and converting a perfect 13 of 13 from the free-throw line. The Anteaters’ efficiency, however, was undermined by 14 turnovers, which the opportunistic Aggies converted into 20 crucial points. UC Davis, conversely, leaned heavily on the three-point shot, making 11 of 27 from beyond the arc, and capitalized on transition opportunities, outscoring Irvine 12-2 on fast breaks.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, ending in a 42-42 deadlock. UC Irvine’s Jurian Dixon, a sophomore from San Diego, provided an early spark, scoring 10 of his team-high 16 points before the break. UC Davis countered with balanced scoring, including 11 first-half points from Nils Cooper of Santa Monica.

The second half continued the tense pattern. The Anteaters built a brief five-point lead early, but the Aggies responded with an 11-2 run, fueled by three-pointers from Omer Suljanovic and Carl Daughtery, to seize a 58-53 advantage with 11:44 remaining. Suljanovic, a junior from Vienna, Austria, was instrumental off the bench, finishing with 12 points.

UC Irvine clawed back, tying the game at 63-63 on a Jurian Dixon layup with 6:14 left. The game’s most important phase began with the score knotted at 70-70 inside the final two minutes. UC Davis’s senior leader, Niko Rocak of Geneva, Switzerland, who finished with a team-high 17 points, five assists and two blocks, drew a foul and made one of two free throws to put the Aggies ahead 71-70 with 1:58 to play.

After a UC Irvine turnover, Marcus Wilson of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was fouled and calmly sank both free throws to extend the lead to 73-70 with 18 seconds remaining. Following an Anteaters timeout, Derin Saran scored on an offensive putback to cut the deficit to 73-72 with just seven seconds on the clock.

UC Davis immediately inbounded to Cooper, who was fouled. He missed the first free throw but sank the second, pushing the lead to 74-72. After another Irvine timeout, the Anteaters’ final attempt to tie or win was a contested three-pointer from Dixon that missed as time expired. A final free throw by Wilson provided the final margin.

For UC Irvine, the loss was a story of missed opportunities despite strong performances. Alongside Dixon’s 16, Kyle Evans of Aliso Viejo posted 10 points and four blocks, while Jovan Jester of Pasadena and Harrison Carrington of Menlo Park each added 11 points. The Anteaters fell to 12-7 overall.

UC Davis improved to 11-7, receiving key contributions beyond Rocak. Daughtery of Maumelle, Arkansas, scored 14 points, Cooper added 11, and Wilson finished with nine points and three assists. The Aggies’ ability to generate nine steals and commit only 10 turnovers proved to be a decisive factor.

The victory gives UC Davis momentum heading into the heart of the conference schedule, while UC Irvine must regroup after a second narrow road loss in a week, having fallen at Hawaii by one point the previous Saturday. Both teams continue Big West play on Thursday, with UC Davis hosting UC San Diego and UC Irvine traveling to face UC Riverside.
