Tommies Use Strong Second Half to Pull Away From Golden Eagles

TULSA, Okla. (Interstat) — In a game defined by runs and resilience, the Saint Thomas Tommies used a dominant second-half defensive performance to pull away from the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles for an 82-71 victory in Summit League men’s basketball action Saturday night at the Mabee Center.

A crowd of 3,353 saw the visiting Tommies (14-4, 3-0) overcome a sharp-shooting first half from Oral Roberts to secure their third consecutive conference win. The Golden Eagles (5-13, 0-3), despite a strong start, could not sustain their offensive efficiency after halftime and dropped their fifth straight game.

The contest unfolded in starkly different halves. Oral Roberts, fueled by the hot hand of Connor Dow and the playmaking of Ofri Naveh, shot confidently in the opening period. Dow, a sophomore from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, scored 15 of his team-high 23 points before the break, connecting on three first-half three-pointers. The Golden Eagles shot 9 for 26 from beyond the arc for the game, with many of those makes coming early to build momentum.

Saint Thomas, however, stayed within striking distance through relentless interior attack and trips to the free-throw line. The Tommies scored 44 points in the paint and attempted 31 free throws, making 23, compared to Oral Roberts’ 22 attempts and 12 makes. The Tommies led by a narrow 43-40 margin at halftime despite Oral Roberts’ superior perimeter shooting.

The most important part of the game was the decisive defensive clamp applied by Saint Thomas to start the second half. The Tommies emerged from the locker room with increased intensity, disrupting Oral Roberts’ rhythm and forcing the Golden Eagles into tougher shots. After allowing 40 first-half points, Saint Thomas held Oral Roberts to just 31 points on 10-of-28 shooting in the second half. The Golden Eagles’ offensive rating plummeted from an efficient first half to a stagnant 106.8 for the game, while the Tommies posted a mark of 124.8.

Key to this defensive effort was limiting second chances, as Saint Thomas won the offensive rebounding battle 10-6, and capitalizing on mistakes, scoring 13 points off eight Oral Roberts turnovers. The Tommies also effectively contained Dow after halftime, holding him to eight second-half points.

Offensively, Saint Thomas was led by the dynamic scoring of guard Nick Janowski. The junior from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, poured in 23 points, consistently attacking the rim and drawing fouls. His backcourt mate, Ryan Dufault, provided a crucial spark off the bench with 10 points, including a key three-pointer in the first half that helped stem an Oral Roberts run.

The Tommies’ frontcourt balance proved overwhelming. Isaiah Johnson-Arigu, a 6-foot-7 forward from Maple Grove, Minnesota, scored 17 points, showcasing his athleticism with several dunks. Fellow big man Carter Bjerke added 11 points and nine rebounds, providing a physical presence inside. Ben Oosterbaan also reached double figures with 10 points.

For Oral Roberts, Dow’s 23 points led the way, while Naveh, from Neot Golan, Israel, finished with 16 points and two assists. Luke Gray contributed eight points and two blocks, but the Golden Eagles’ offense became too reliant on individual efforts as the game progressed, finishing with only four total assists.

Saint Thomas slowly but surely extended its lead throughout the second half, methodically building an advantage that grew to as many as 15 points. Oral Roberts could never mount a sustained counter-run, as each mini-spurt was answered by a Tommies basket, often in the paint or at the foul line.

The victory solidifies Saint Thomas’s strong start to Summit League play as they continue their transition to Division I. The Tommies will look to carry this momentum into a road test at North Dakota on Thursday. Oral Roberts, still seeking its first conference win, will try to regroup on the road at Denver on Wednesday.
