Louisiana Tech Edges Delaware in Overtime Thriller
RUSTON, La. (Interstat) — In a game defined by grinding defense and missed opportunities, Louisiana Tech survived a furious Delaware rally and a late-game collapse of its own to escape with a 70-68 overtime victory in a Conference USA men’s basketball matchup Saturday at the Thomas Assembly Center.
The Bulldogs, who led by as many as 13 points in the second half, squandered a six-point lead in the final 40 seconds of regulation before regrouping in the extra period to improve to 9-7 overall. Delaware, which has now lost eight of its last ten, fell to 5-11 despite a valiant comeback effort on the road.
The most critical sequence of the contest unfolded in the waning moments of regulation and the opening minute of overtime, a stretch that saw momentum violently swing between the teams. Louisiana Tech appeared to have sealed the game when DJ Dudley converted a layup with 22 seconds left in the second half, pushing the Bulldogs’ lead to 69-63.
Delaware, refusing to capitulate, responded with urgency. Christian Bliss, who orchestrated much of the Blue Hens’ offense all afternoon, drove for a layup to cut the deficit to four with 19 seconds remaining. On the ensuing inbounds play, Louisiana Tech’s Melian Martinez was fouled and sent to the line for two shots with 16 seconds left. The 7-foot center missed both free throws, giving Delaware a lifeline.
The Blue Hens capitalized swiftly. Bliss pushed the ball upcourt and found Tyler Houser for a clutch 3-pointer from the wing with 3.2 seconds on the clock, suddenly slicing the Louisiana Tech lead to a single point at 69-68. On the next inbounds pass, Delaware immediately fouled Dudley, who went to the line with 1.1 seconds remaining. Dudley made the first free throw but missed the second, leaving the door open for a miracle. Delaware’s desperation three-quarter court heave was off target, sending the game to overtime tied at 70.
The overtime period was a stark contrast in offensive execution, with both teams visibly fatigued. Delaware won the opening tip but managed only a single field goal—a jumper from Justyn Fernandez—in the five-minute frame, scoring just five points total. Louisiana Tech was scarcely better, mustering only seven points, but it proved just enough.
The Bulldogs scored the first four points of overtime on free throws from Dudley and Martinez. Delaware’s Fernandez connected on a mid-range jumper to pull within 72-70 with 3:18 left, but those would be the Blue Hens’ final points of the game. Both teams traded empty possessions and turnovers down the stretch. With Louisiana Tech clinging to a 70-68 lead in the final seconds of overtime, Delaware had a chance to tie or win. Bliss, who led all players with nine assists, created space for a potential game-tying jumper but missed with two seconds left. Martinez secured the defensive rebound for Louisiana Tech and was fouled, making one of two free throws to provide the final margin.
The game was a tale of two halves and contrasting styles. Delaware controlled the first half behind efficient perimeter shooting, connecting on 5 of 11 from 3-point range to take a 34-29 lead into the break. Justyn Fernandez led the early charge for the Blue Hens, finishing with a team-high 18 points.
Louisiana Tech flipped the script in the second half by imposing its physicality, dominating points in the paint 34-22 for the game and generating 13 fast-break points to Delaware’s zero. The Bulldogs also leveraged a significant advantage at the free-throw line, attempting 30 free throws to Delaware’s 15, though they made only 19. A 15-4 run midway through the second half, fueled by back-to-back 3-pointers from Jaylen Fenner, gave Louisiana Tech its largest lead at 52-39.
Delaware’s resilience was keyed by Bliss, who played 45 minutes and tallied 14 points, six rebounds and those nine assists. Fernandez added his 18 points, while Houser contributed 12 points and six rebounds. Macon Emory provided a strong interior presence with 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
Louisiana Tech was led by Dudley’s 17 points, four rebounds and three assists. Fenner provided a crucial spark off the bench with 15 points, all in the second half and overtime, including three 3-pointers. AJ Bates added 11 points and four assists, while Avery Thomas chipped in seven points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
Statistically, the game was a defensive struggle. Delaware shot 46.2% from the field but managed only four assists against 11 turnovers. Louisiana Tech shot just 41.1% and was a frigid 5 of 17 from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs won the rebounding battle 38-31, including a 10-6 edge on the offensive glass, which led to 12 second-chance points.
The victory keeps Louisiana Tech above .percent in conference play, while Delaware continues to search for consistency in close games, falling to 1-3 in contests decided by five points or fewer this season.
