Taylor’s 27 Points Lead UNC Asheville to Road Win Over Radford

FAIRLAWN, Va. (Interstat) — Kameron Taylor scored 27 points and UNC Asheville used a dominant performance from beyond the arc to cruise past Radford 91-72 in a Big South Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at the D.N. Dedmon Center.

The Bulldogs (8-10, 2-1) connected on 11 of 25 three-point attempts, a 44% clip, while stifling the Highlanders (9-9, 2-1) to a frigid 3-for-26 showing from long range. That 24-point disparity from three-point territory proved insurmountable for Radford, which entered the game as a 4.5-point favorite.

Taylor, a 6-foot-7 guard from Charlotte, North Carolina, added five rebounds and five assists in 37 minutes, leading a balanced Asheville attack. DJ Patrick scored 24 points, fueled by six three-pointers, and Justin Wright contributed 16 points and six assists. Toyaz Solomon posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Radford’s Dennis Parker, a 6-6 forward from Richmond, Virginia, kept the Highlanders within reach for much of the contest, finishing with 24 points and 10 rebounds. But the team’s offensive struggles were pronounced, managing an offensive rating of just 97.0 points per 100 possessions compared to Asheville’s efficient 121.7.

The most important stretch of the game came early in the second half as Asheville systematically extinguished any hope of a Radford rally. Leading 42-36 at halftime, the Bulldogs opened the final period with a 13-4 run. Taylor and Patrick hit key shots during the surge, which pushed the lead to 15 points and forced a Radford timeout with 16:57 remaining.

Radford never recovered. Every time the Highlanders attempted to string together stops, Asheville answered, often with a three-pointer. Patrick’s sixth triple of the afternoon gave the Bulldogs a 70-53 advantage with just over six minutes to play, effectively sealing the outcome.

While Radford won the battle in the paint 40-34 and scored 18 points off turnovers, its inability to generate any consistent perimeter offense doomed its chances. Del Jones scored 11 points and Frederik Erichsen added 11 off the bench for the Highlanders, but the team shot just 39% overall from the field.

The victory marked a significant road win for UNC Asheville, which evened its conference record and handed Radford its first Big South loss. The Bulldogs’ offense hummed, assisting on 18 of their 31 made field goals and committing only 10 turnovers.

Radford, which had won two straight conference games, will look to regroup on the road at Gardner-Webb on Wednesday. UNC Asheville continues its road swing at Presbyterian on the same night.
