Texas Tech at Houston

Top-15 Clash Highlights Big 12 Slate as Houston Hosts Texas Tech

HOUSTON (Interstat) — A premier early-season Big 12 Conference showdown is set for Tuesday night when the Houston Cougars host the Texas Tech Red Raiders at Hofheinz Pavilion.

The matchup features two of the league’s hottest teams. Houston (13-1, 1-0 Big 12) has won nine straight games since its only loss to Tennessee on Nov. 25. Texas Tech (11-3, 1-0) enters on a five-game winning streak, including an impressive 82-81 road victory at then-Duke on Dec. 20.

The Cougars, led by coach Kelvin Sampson, continue to win with their trademark stifling defense, ranking among the national leaders in scoring defense. Their offense flows through guard Kingston Flemings, who is averaging 17.3 points and 5.2 assists over his last four contests. He scored 19 points with six assists in Saturday’s 67-60 conference-opening win at Cincinnati.

The Red Raiders counter with one of the nation’s most dynamic forwards in sophomore JT Toppin. He is averaging 21.8 points and 9.0 rebounds over his last five games, posting four double-doubles in that span. He dominated with 23 points and 14 rebounds in Tech’s 102-80 rout of Oklahoma State on Saturday. Guard Christian Anderson added a 19-point, 13-assist double-double in that win.

This contest will be a stark contrast in styles. Houston prefers a physical, half-court grind, while Texas Tech has shown the ability to score in bunches, exceeding 100 points twice this season. The Red Raiders’ three losses have come by a combined 16 points, all to teams currently ranked.

The game is the first of a critical home-and-home series between the new conference rivals. They will meet again in Lubbock on Jan. 24.

Tuesday’s winner will gain an early advantage in the loaded Big 12 race and a likely boost in next week’s AP Top 25. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. CST.
