Richmond at Fordham
RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — Two Atlantic 10 men’s basketball teams looking to rebound from conference-opening losses will meet Sunday when the Richmond Spiders visit the Fordham Rams at Rose Hill Gym.
Richmond (10-4, 0-1 A-10) enters off a 99-85 home defeat to George Washington on Wednesday, snapping a three-game winning streak. The Spiders’ offense, which averages 79.6 points per game, was led by Will Johnston’s 20 points in the loss. Johnston, a key guard, has been a consistent scorer, including a 17-point outing in a win over Southern Illinois on Dec. 13.
Fordham (9-5, 0-1) also seeks its first conference win after falling 63-56 at Dayton on Wednesday. The Rams rely on guard DeJour Reaves, who scored 18 points with six assists against the Flyers. Reaves has scored in double figures in nine straight games, averaging 17.1 points over his last seven contests.
The matchup features contrasting styles. Richmond’s potent offense will test a Fordham defense that allows just 64.9 points per game, ranking among the nation’s best. The Rams’ physicality was evident in their loss to Dayton, where Rikus Schulte (14 rebounds) and Jack Whitbourn (12 rebounds) controlled the glass.
Richmond has faced recent struggles, dropping two of its last three, including a surprising home loss to Charleston Southern. Fordham has won four of its last six, with all victories coming at home, where it is 7-1 this season.
Historically, Richmond has dominated the series, winning 19 of the last 22 meetings. However, Fordham’s defensive identity under coach Keith Urgo presents a new challenge. The Spiders must improve their own defense after allowing 99 points to George Washington.
Sunday’s winner will gain early momentum in the crowded A-10 standings, while the loser will face an 0-2 conference start.
The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026, at Rose Hill Gym in New York.
