Richmond Rallies Past Fordham in Atlantic 10 Road Win

NEW YORK (Interstat) — In a game defined by blistering offensive efficiency and a decisive disparity from beyond the arc, the Richmond Spiders snapped a two-game skid with an 83-75 victory over the Fordham Rams in Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball action Sunday afternoon at Rose Hill Gym.

The Spiders, who improved to 11-4 overall, rode a spectacular three-point shooting performance and a dominant second-half start to overcome a persistent Fordham team that controlled the interior but could not keep pace from long distance. Richmond connected on 13 of 19 attempts from three-point range, a scorching 68.4 percent, while Fordham managed just 5 of 21.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the opening minutes of the second half. Leading 33-28 at halftime, Richmond quickly extinguished any hope of a Fordham rally with a clinical offensive burst. The Spiders scored on their first three possessions of the period, part of a larger 17-9 run over the first six minutes that pushed their lead to 13 points. This cushion proved critical, as Fordham would draw no closer than six points for the remainder of the contest. Richmond’s offensive rating of 130.6, fueled by this efficient stretch, ultimately overwhelmed the Rams.

Will Johnston, Richmond’s top star, led all scorers with 20 points, adding six rebounds and six assists in 28 minutes. His backcourt mate, AJ Lopez of Queens, New York, contributed 16 points, many coming during key stretches. The Spiders’ frontcourt also delivered from deep, as 6-foot-11 center Mike Walz of Berwyn, Pennsylvania, hit three three-pointers en route to 14 points.

Fordham, which fell to 9-6, was paced by a double-double from German forward Rikus Schulte, who had 17 points and 11 rebounds. DeJour Reaves of Syracuse, New York, scored a team-high 19 points, and Australian big man Jack Whitbourn added 12 points and 11 boards. The Rams dominated the glass with 17 offensive rebounds leading to 34 points in the paint, but were undone by 14 turnovers that Richmond converted into 20 points. Fordham also managed only two assists for the entire game, highlighting their offensive stagnation against Richmond’s active defense, which recorded eight steals.

Despite the Rams’ interior advantage and a slight edge in possessions, Richmond’s shot-making and ball security were the difference. The Spiders committed just five turnovers and dished out eight assists, allowing their efficient offense to operate cleanly. Fordham’s offensive rating of 114.7, while solid, paled in comparison to Richmond’s elite output.

The game drew an attendance of 1,643 to the historic Rose Hill Gym. Richmond entered as a narrow one-point favorite according to pregame betting lines, with the national statistical ELO system giving Fordham a slight 52.3 percent probability to win. The combined score of 158 points sailed over the posted over/under line of 141.

Richmond, which had lost its previous two games to Charleston Southern and George Washington, now looks ahead to a road contest at Saint Bonaventure on Wednesday. Fordham, coming off a loss at Dayton, will host George Mason on Wednesday.
