Saint Peter’s Edges Fairfield in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Thriller
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Interstat) — In a grinding Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference clash defined more by defensive pressure than offensive artistry, Saint Peter’s outlasted Fairfield 70-66 on Monday night at Webster Bank Arena.
The Peacocks, improving to 6-5 overall, leaned on a disruptive defense that generated nine steals and forced 12 turnovers to overcome a subpar shooting night. Saint Peter’s shot just 40% from the floor and 23.8% from three-point range but compensated with 17 offensive rebounds and a near-perfect 9-for-11 performance at the free throw line.
Fairfield, which fell to 8-6, was carried by the high-scoring duo of Brandon Benjamin and Braden Sparks but could not sustain momentum after taking a 35-31 lead into halftime. The Stags shot 40.4% from the field and were hampered by just five assists against their 12 turnovers.
The game’s most critical sequence unfolded in the final minute, transforming a one-possession contest into a Saint Peter’s victory. Trailing 65-62 with under 30 seconds to play, Fairfield’s Halon Rawlins blocked a Bryce Eaton jump shot, preserving the Stags’ narrow lead. On the ensuing possession, however, Saint Peter’s locked down defensively. Following a Fairfield timeout with 17 seconds left, the Peacocks forced a difficult situation for the Stags.
Declan Wucherpfennig was fouled and sent to the line for two shots with six seconds remaining and a chance to extend a one-point lead. He missed the first free throw, keeping the Fairfield advantage at 66-65. After making the second, the Stags led by two.
Saint Peter’s advanced the ball quickly, and without a timeout, Eaton launched a deep three-pointer from the right wing with just over four seconds on the clock. The shot missed, but Brent Bland, crashing the glass from the weak side, secured the offensive rebound and was immediately fouled by Rawlins on the putback attempt.
With the game clock frozen at 4.4 seconds and his team down two, Bland stepped to the line for a one-and-one opportunity. He missed the first free throw, but in a chaotic scramble for the rebound, the ball was tipped out of bounds by Fairfield, granting Saint Peter’s a final possession under its own basket.
On the inbounds play, Eaton received the pass, drove hard to his left, and found a cutting Zaakir Williamson for a layup as he was fouled with 1.7 seconds left. Williamson completed the three-point play, sinking the free throw to put the Peacocks ahead 68-66. A last-ditch heave by Fairfield was intercepted, and Elijah Perkins sealed the game with two final free throws for the 70-66 margin.
Benjamin, a 6-foot-8 forward from Newark, New Jersey, led all scorers with 21 points for Fairfield, adding nine rebounds. Sparks, a guard from Villa Rica, Georgia, contributed 22 points in 40 minutes of action. Wucherpfennig added 11 points.
Saint Peter’s was led by a balanced attack. Eaton, a guard from Detroit, Michigan, scored 17 points and dished out four assists. Bland, from Wheatley Heights, New York, scored 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and recorded three steals. Williamson, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, posted 11 points and nine rebounds, while Jahki Gupton and TJ Robinson each added eight points.
The game was a defensive struggle from the outset, with both teams combining for more steals (14) than assists (14) in the first half. Fairfield built its halftime lead behind 12 points from Sparks, but Saint Peter’s methodically chipped away in the second half, finally tying the game midway through the period and setting the stage for the frantic finish.
The announced attendance at Webster Bank Arena was 1,772. Saint Peter’s returns to action Friday at home against Marist. Fairfield travels to face Canisius on Friday.
