Gonzaga Dominates Pepperdine in West Coast Conference Opener

MALIBU, Calif. (Interstat) — The Gonzaga Bulldogs delivered a performance of overwhelming force Sunday afternoon, dismantling the Pepperdine Waves 96-56 in a West Coast Conference men’s basketball game at Firestone Fieldhouse.

From the opening tip, the Bulldogs imposed their will, building an 18-point halftime lead and never relenting. The victory improved Gonzaga’s record to 13-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Pepperdine fell to 5-9 and 0-1.

The most decisive phase of the game came immediately after the opening whistle. Gonzaga unleashed a 15-0 run to start the contest, a devastating opening salvo that set the tone for the entire afternoon. The Bulldogs scored on their first seven possessions, with Braeden Smith setting the pace. The sophomore guard from Seattle scored or assisted on Gonzaga’s first 13 points, opening the game with a layup before feeding Steele Venters for a dunk and a three-pointer. The Waves did not score until an Aaron Clark jumper more than four minutes into the game, by which point the Bulldogs had already established a commanding and ultimately insurmountable advantage.

Gonzaga’s dominance was comprehensive and reflected in every facet of the box score. The Bulldogs outscored Pepperdine 50-18 in the paint, converted 24 points off 15 Waves turnovers while allowing only 11 points off their own miscues, and held a 19-0 advantage in fastbreak points. Defensively, Gonzaga was a wall at the rim, recording 12 blocks as a team.

Tyon Grant-Foster led all scorers with 18 points in just 20 minutes off the bench, adding four blocks and two steals. His athleticism and defensive presence were pivotal in stifling Pepperdine’s offensive rhythm. Braeden Smith orchestrated the offense masterfully, finishing with 15 points and eight assists. Davis Fogle provided 15 points off the bench, and Graham Ike added 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

For Pepperdine, Yonatan Levy and Javon Cooley each scored 15 points. Levy, from Hod HaSharon, Israel, also grabbed six rebounds. Danilo Dozic of Belgrade, Serbia, contributed eight points. The Waves struggled to find consistent offense, shooting just 32% from the field for the game and going 7 of 28 from three-point range.

Gonzaga led 44-26 at halftime and only expanded the margin after the break. A 12-2 run early in the second half, capped by a Braden Huff dunk off another Smith assist, pushed the lead to 60-33, extinguishing any faint hope of a Pepperdine rally. The Bulldogs’ depth was on full display as 11 players scored and the lead ballooned to as many as 42 points.

The Bulldogs have now won four consecutive games since their lone loss at Michigan last month, with each victory coming by at least 14 points. They continue to showcase a balanced attack and a stifling defense that has held opponents to an average of 59.5 points during this current win streak.

Pepperdine, which entered the game having won two of its last three, was simply overmatched by Gonzaga’s size, speed, and execution. The Waves were out-rebounded 45-33 and managed only five offensive rebounds against the taller Bulldogs.

An announced crowd of 1,912 at the 3,104-seat Firestone Fieldhouse saw the Bulldogs cover the pregame spread with ease, though the combined total of 152 points fell just under the over/under line of 153.5.

Gonzaga now travels to face San Diego on Tuesday, looking to maintain its momentum in WCC play. Pepperdine remains at home to host Saint Mary’s, also on Tuesday, seeking to rebound from the lopsided defeat. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Spokane on Jan. 21.
