Iowa State Rolls Past Eastern Illinois to Stay Unbeaten
AMES, Iowa (Interstat) — The Iowa State Cyclones, one of the nation’s few remaining undefeated teams, methodically dispatched the visiting Eastern Illinois Panthers 78-53 in a nonconference men’s basketball game Sunday at a sold-out Hilton Coliseum.
The victory pushed Iowa State’s record to 11-0, while Eastern Illinois fell to 2-8.
The most important part of the game was a decisive 19-2 run by Iowa State late in the first half that transformed a competitive contest into a commanding lead from which the Panthers never recovered. With just over eight minutes remaining before halftime and Iowa State leading 23-20, the Cyclones unleashed a stifling defensive effort that fueled their transition game. The run featured a steal and dunk by Killyan Toure, a three-pointer from Milan Momcilovic, and multiple interior finishes from Blake Buchanan and Tamin Lipsey. By the time the dust settled, Iowa State held a 42-22 advantage, effectively sealing the outcome before the intermission.
Iowa State built its victory on interior dominance and efficiency, overcoming an uncharacteristically cold shooting afternoon from beyond the arc. The Cyclones shot just 4 of 23 from three-point range but compensated by making 27 of 58 field goals overall and 20 of 27 free throws. They outrebounded Eastern Illinois 41-30, including a 10-5 edge on the offensive glass, which led to 15 second-chance points.
Eastern Illinois, which has faced a rigorous early-season schedule, struggled offensively throughout. The Panthers shot 35.8% from the field and committed 15 turnovers against Iowa State’s active defense. They were held to an offensive rating of 77.1 points per 100 possessions.
Momcilovic, a sophomore forward from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, led all scorers with 18 points. Buchanan, a 6-foot-10 center from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, was a force inside with 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting, adding two blocks and two steals. Lipsey, the hometown guard from Ames, orchestrated the offense with seven assists and nine points, while Joshua Jefferson contributed 11 points and five assists.
For Eastern Illinois, Zion Fruster and Kooper Jacobi each scored 11 points. Meechie White added nine points and two assists.
The Cyclones led 44-28 at halftime and maintained at least a 15-point cushion throughout the second half, extending the lead to as many as 25 points. Iowa State’s defense was consistent, holding the Panthers to 25 points after the break.
A crowd of 13,876 watched the game, which saw Iowa State cover the pregame spread as a 41-point favorite. The combined score of 131 points fell under the over/under line of 141.
Iowa State will look to continue its perfect start when it hosts Long Beach State on Dec. 21. Eastern Illinois returns home to face SIU Edwardsville on Dec. 18.
