Iowa Dominates Western Michigan in Nonconference Tuneup

IOWA CITY, Iowa (Interstat) — The Iowa Hawkeyes delivered a dominant wire-to-wire performance, overwhelming the Western Michigan Broncos 91-51 in a nonconference men’s basketball game Sunday at a sold-out Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes, improving to 9-2, left little doubt from the opening tip, using a devastating 21-2 first-half run to build an insurmountable lead. The Broncos, who fell to 4-6, struggled mightily against Iowa’s efficient offense and disruptive defense, shooting just 29.8% from the field and committing 13 turnovers.

Iowa’s offensive execution was clinical. The Hawkeyes shot 55.9% from the field and 45.2% from three-point range, amassing 91 points on just 64 possessions for a staggering offensive rating of 142.0. Western Michigan, by contrast, managed an offensive rating of just 72.4, scoring 51 points on 70 trips.

The most important stretch of the game came in the opening minutes. After Western Michigan’s Jalen Griffith hit a three-pointer to cut an early Iowa lead to 8-3, the Hawkeyes unleashed a decisive blitz. Over the next six minutes, Iowa outscored the Broncos 21-2, transforming a competitive start into a 29-5 rout. The run was fueled by a balanced attack, with Cam Manyawu scoring inside, Bennett Stirtz facilitating, and Alvaro Folgueiras and Tate Sage connecting from deep. The Broncos went scoreless for over five minutes during the surge, missing seven consecutive shots and turning the ball over three times, effectively ending the contest’s competitive phase before the midpoint of the first half.

Iowa’s first-half explosion saw them take a 52-16 lead into the break, having shot 60% from the field and forced eight Western Michigan turnovers. The Hawkeyes scored 38 points in the paint for the game and converted 11 points off turnovers.

Stirtz, a guard from Liberty, Missouri, led a deep and balanced Iowa scoring effort with 13 points and six assists in 24 minutes. He was one of four Hawkeyes to score 13 points, joined by Brendan Hausen of Amarillo, Texas, Folgueiras of Malaga, Spain, and Manyawu of Kansas City, Missouri, who added 11 points. Kael Combs of Nixa, Missouri, directed the offense with five assists. The Hawkeyes shared the ball effectively, with their 14 made three-pointers coming from seven different players.

Western Michigan was led by Jayden Brewer of Indianapolis, who scored 10 points. Carson Vis of Byron Center, Michigan, and Jalen Griffith of Chicago each added 11 points, with Griffith dishing out five assists. The Broncos showed more fight in the second half, scoring 35 points, but could never cut the deficit below 30.

The Hawkeyes dominated nearly every statistical category, outrebounding Western Michigan 39-30, recording more assists, steals, and blocks, and committing only six turnovers. The victory came in front of an announced crowd of 10,341.

Iowa, which entered the game as a 28.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks, easily covered the spread. The combined score of 142 points fell under the posted over/under line of 145.5. The Hawkeyes will look to build on this performance when they host Bucknell on Saturday in Des Moines. Western Michigan returns home to face Buffalo next Saturday, seeking to rebound from a three-game road trip where they went 1-2.
