Xavier Edges Cincinnati in Crosstown Shootout Behind Carroll’s 30

CINCINNATI (Interstat) — In a tense Crosstown Shootout that lived up to its storied rivalry billing, the Xavier Musketeers used a dominant second-half performance from Tre Carroll and clutch late free throws to edge the Cincinnati Bearcats 79-74 on Friday night before a sold-out crowd of 10,880 at Cintas Center.

The game, a seesaw affair for the first 30 minutes, was ultimately decided by Xavier’s ability to execute in the final five minutes and capitalize at the foul line, overcoming a gritty effort from a Cincinnati team that refused to fade.

The most critical phase of the contest unfolded in the final 90 seconds. With Xavier clinging to a 76-74 lead after Cincinnati’s Day Day Thomas converted a driving layup with 5.1 seconds remaining, the Musketeers needed to inbound the ball under their own basket. The Bearcats, out of timeouts, were forced to foul immediately. Xavier guard All Wright, a native of Durango, Mexico, was sent to the line with 3.3 seconds on the clock and calmly sank both free throws, extending the lead to 78-74 and effectively sealing the outcome.

Cincinnati’s last-gasp attempt, a long inbound pass, resulted in a foul on Kerr Kriisa with 0.3 seconds left. Xavier’s Jovan Milicevic made the first of two free throws to provide the final margin, as the Musketeers avoided what would have been a costly upset on their home floor.

The victory improved Xavier’s season record to 7-3, while Cincinnati fell to 6-3. The Musketeers also covered the pregame spread as 1.5-point favorites, and the combined score of 153 points went under the over/under line of 144.5.

The game’s narrative was largely written by Carroll, a 6-foot-7 forward from Port Charlotte, Florida. After a first half where both teams were locked at 37, Carroll erupted, scoring 19 of his game-high 30 points after intermission. He finished an efficient 13-of-22 from the field, adding 5 rebounds and a block in 35 minutes. His array of post moves, floaters, and mid-range jumpers repeatedly stalled Cincinnati rallies, and his steal and subsequent layup with 1:31 left pushed Xavier’s lead to 72-70, a momentum swing from which the Bearcats never fully recovered.

Cincinnati was led by the scoring tandem of Shon Abaev and Day Day Thomas. Abaev, a 6-foot-8 wing from Broward County, Florida, scored 16 points, including four three-pointers. Thomas, a 6-foot-1 guard from Bishopville, South Carolina, added 15 points and 3 assists. The Bearcats also received a versatile performance from Spanish forward Baba Miller, who tallied 10 points, 6 assists, and 6 rebounds.

Xavier’s supporting cast provided crucial balance. Serbian forward Filip Borovicanin scored 12 points and dished out 4 assists, while Canadian big man Jovan Milicevic also added 12 points. The Musketeers’ backcourt of Malik Messina-Moore and All Wright combined for 10 assists, with Wright’s late free throws proving decisive.

Statistically, the game was remarkably even in many categories. Xavier held a slight 28-26 edge in points in the paint and a 10-8 advantage in fast-break points. The most telling disparity came in points off turnovers, where Xavier converted Bearcat miscues into a 9-3 advantage, a critical factor in a five-point game.

The first half was a defensive struggle, featuring 10 ties and 9 lead changes. Cincinnati’s Kerr Kriisa hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the teams into the locker room knotted at 37. The second half followed a similar pattern until the 12-minute mark, when Xavier began to find a consistent rhythm through Carroll. A 7-0 Musketeer run, capped by a Roddie Anderson three-pointer, gave Xavier a 56-50 lead with 12:21 to play, its largest of the game to that point.

Cincinnati responded with a 9-2 spurt of its own, retaking a 59-58 lead on a Thomas three-pointer. From there, the teams traded blows in a classic rivalry finish, setting the stage for the final-minute drama and Xavier’s clutch free-throw shooting.

The Bearcats will look to rebound on Dec. 13 when they face Georgia in Atlanta. Xavier continues its homestand against Missouri State on Dec. 12.
