Jackson State Holds Off Louisiana-Lafayette for First Win
LAFAYETTE, La. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle between two teams desperately seeking a positive result, the Jackson State Tigers secured their first victory of the season, holding off a second-half rally by the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns for a 51-45 win on Friday night at the Cajundome.
A crowd of 2,704 watched as the Tigers, who entered the game with an 0-6 record, built a substantial first-half lead only to see it nearly evaporate after halftime. The game was a stark contrast to the high-scoring affairs both teams had endured in their early-season non-conference slates.
Jackson State seized control from the opening tip, starting the game on a 12-0 run. The Tigers’ defense was suffocating, forcing the Ragin’ Cajuns into missed shots and turnovers on their first several possessions. It took Louisiana-Lafayette over five minutes to get on the scoreboard, finally doing so on a three-pointer from Dariyus Woodson.
The Tigers’ lead ballooned to 18 points late in the first half before the Ragin’ Cajuns managed a small burst to close the period. A layup from Dorian Finister in the final seconds cut the deficit to 29-18 at the break. The first half was defined by frigid shooting from both sides, but particularly from Louisiana-Lafayette, which struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Jackson State’s active defense.
The second half saw a determined comeback effort from the home team. Sparked by Woodson and Jaxon Olvera, the Ragin’ Cajuns slowly chipped away at the Tigers’ advantage. A three-pointer from Woodson with just over 10 minutes remaining brought Louisiana-Lafayette within six points, sending a jolt of energy through the home crowd.
Jackson State’s offense, which had also gone cold, found answers when it needed them most. Daeshun Ruffin, the Tigers’ standout guard from Jackson, Mississippi, consistently broke down the defense for crucial baskets to stem the Ragin’ Cajuns’ momentum. His driving layup with under a minute to play pushed the Tigers’ lead back to five points and effectively sealed the game.
Ruffin led all scorers with 18 points, adding three assists and a steal in 31 minutes of action. His backcourt mate, Dorian McMillian of Pascagoula, Mississippi, provided critical support with 11 points, two assists, and a game-high three steals while playing a team-high 37 minutes. Forward Jayme Mitchell, also from Jackson, contributed 13 points and was a force on the glass with several key defensive rebounds.
For Louisiana-Lafayette, which fell to 1-7, Dariyus Woodson of Baytown, Texas, led the way with 13 points. Jaxon Olvera from Houston added 10 points. The Ragin’ Cajuns’ defense was anchored by Dorian Finister of New Orleans, who recorded three blocked shots.
The game was a statistical anomaly, with the combined score of 96 points falling far below the pre-game over/under line of 135.5. The victory was a significant one for Jackson State coach Mo Williams, breaking a season-opening six-game losing streak that included blowout losses to power-conference opponents like Arkansas, Auburn, and Illinois.
The loss extended a difficult start for Louisiana-Lafayette under coach Bob Marlin, as the team has now lost seven of its first eight games, with the lone win coming against Southeastern Louisiana.
Jackson State will look to build on the momentum from its first win when it travels to face Kennesaw State on Tuesday. Louisiana-Lafayette will attempt to regroup on the road against Lamar next Wednesday.
