Bowling Green Falcons Dominate Virginia Military Institute Keydets in Florida Showcase
FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of defensive force and offensive efficiency, the Bowling Green Falcons routed the Virginia Military Institute Keydets 81-48 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Wednesday at Alico Arena.
The Falcons set the tone from the opening tip, establishing a dominant first-half lead from which the Keydets never recovered. Bowling Green’s defense was the story of the game, holding VMI to an anemic shooting performance. The Keydets managed just 10 field goals on 50 attempts, a dismal 20 percent from the floor. Their struggles were even more pronounced from beyond the arc, where they hit only 3 of 28 three-point attempts.
Bowling Green’s offense, by contrast, operated with precision. The Falcons scored 81 points on 68 possessions, translating to an offensive rating of 118.9, while VMI’s offensive rating was a meager 71.4. The Falcons shot 46.9 percent from the field and connected on 10 three-pointers.
The game was effectively decided by halftime, with Bowling Green building a 45-20 lead. The Falcons controlled the interior, outscoring VMI 36-14 in the paint and grabbing 17 offensive rebounds that led to numerous second-chance opportunities.
Sam Towns, a 6-foot-9 forward from Columbus, Ohio, was a force for Bowling Green, posting a double-double with 12 points and a remarkable 18 rebounds in just 24 minutes of play. He also added two assists and a block. Mayar Wol of Raleigh, North Carolina, led all scorers with 21 points, knocking down several key three-pointers. Troy Glover, a 6-foot-10 center from Wheaton, Illinois, provided a strong inside presence with 11 points, five rebounds and a block.
For the Keydets, Linus Holmstrom of Stockholm, Sweden, was the only player to reach double figures, scoring 11 points. The team relied heavily on free throws, making 25 of 32 attempts, but their inability to score from the field proved insurmountable.
The Falcons improved their season record to 5-2 with the victory, while the loss dropped Virginia Military Institute to 3-6. The game was part of a multi-team event hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University. An announced crowd of 680 watched the contest.
Bowling Green’s defensive pressure and rebounding edge overwhelmed VMI from the start, and the Falcons never relinquished control, cruising to a lopsided victory that was never in doubt during the second half. The Falcons next travel to face Kansas State on Monday. Virginia Military Institute’s next contest is on the road at UCF on Saturday.
