South Dakota State Routs Georgia State in Dominant Home Victory
BROOKINGS, S.D. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive firepower, the South Dakota State Jackrabbits delivered a decisive 105-58 victory over the visiting Georgia State Panthers in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night at a raucous Frost Arena.
From the opening tip, the Jackrabbits established a dominant tone, overwhelming the Panthers on both ends of the floor. The home team’s offensive execution was nearly flawless in the first half, as they built an insurmountable 53-19 lead by halftime. The onslaught continued after the break, with South Dakota State outscoring Georgia State 52-39 in the second half to secure the lopsided win before an announced crowd of 2,641.
The victory improved South Dakota State’s season record to 4-2, while Georgia State’s early-season struggles deepened, falling to 1-5.
South Dakota State’s offense was a model of efficiency and balance, with six players scoring in double figures. The attack was spearheaded by a formidable frontcourt performance from Damon Wilkinson. The 6-foot-10 sophomore from De Smet, S.D., was a force in the paint, scoring 17 points and pulling down multiple rebounds in just 13 minutes of action.
He was complemented by a strong all-around effort from Matthew Mors, a 6-foot-7 junior from Yankton, S.D., who poured in 18 points. The backcourt was equally potent, with Joe Sayler of White River, S.D., orchestrating the offense with 15 points and six assists. Jaden Jackson from Bellevue, Neb., added 14 points and five assists, while Trey Buchanan of Westfield, Ind., chipped in 15 points, including several key three-pointers.
For Georgia State, the bright spots were few in a game defined by the Jackrabbits’ relentless pressure. Jelani Hamilton, a 6-foot-6 guard from Marietta, Ga., provided a spark off the bench, leading the Panthers with 21 points, many of which came from aggressive drives and free throws. Starting guard Malachi Brown from Buford, Ga., added 15 points and two assists, but the Panthers struggled to find consistent scoring beyond that duo.
The game’s trajectory was set in the opening minutes. After Georgia State’s Malachi Brown tied the game at 2-2 with an early layup, South Dakota State erupted. The Jackrabbits unleashed a 16-2 run, fueled by three-pointers from Mors and Jackson, along with relentless inside scoring from Wilkinson. The Panthers were plagued by turnovers and cold shooting, unable to mount any significant response to the Jackrabbits’ barrage.
South Dakota State’s ball movement was exceptional, leading to numerous high-percentage shots, while their defense consistently disrupted Georgia State’s offensive sets. The lead ballooned to 30 points late in the first half and continued to grow after halftime, as the Jackrabbits’ depth and scoring balance proved too much for the overmatched Panthers.
The game was a stark contrast in recent fortunes for both teams. South Dakota State entered the contest having handily defeated Peru State in its previous outing, while Georgia State was looking to rebound from a road loss to Arizona State.
Looking ahead, Georgia State will attempt to get back on track when it returns home to host Samford on Tuesday. South Dakota State, meanwhile, continues its homestand with a game against Utah Valley, also on Tuesday.
