Delaware Holds Off Saint Peter’s for First Win
NEWARK, Del. (Interstat) — In a matchup of teams seeking to turn around their early-season fortunes, the Delaware Blue Hens used a dominant first-half offensive display to secure an 81-70 victory over the Saint Peter’s Peacocks in a non-conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
A crowd of 1,600 watched as Delaware, now 1-3, built a commanding 23-point halftime lead behind a blistering shooting performance, only to withstand a furious second-half rally from the Peacocks, who also moved to 1-3.
The game was decided in the opening period, where the Blue Hens operated with remarkable efficiency. Delaware shot an astounding 61.5% from the field in the first half, including 7 of 11 from three-point range, to race out to a 49-26 lead at the break. The Peacocks, by contrast, struggled to find their rhythm, connecting on just 10 of their 32 first-half field goal attempts.
Justyn Fernandez led the Delaware charge, scoring 18 of his team-high total in the first half. The 6-foot-5 guard from Richmond, Virginia, set the tone immediately, opening the scoring with a dunk just four seconds into the game off a jump ball win and assist from Macon Emory. Fernandez’s early three-pointer, followed quickly by another dunk from Emory and a three from Jameel Brown, spurred an early 10-0 run that forced an early Saint Peter’s timeout and established a lead the Blue Hens would not relinquish.
The Hens’ offensive flow was seamless, with Fernandez, Emory, and Tyler Houser all inflicting damage. Emory, a 6-foot-8 forward from Devon, Pennsylvania, was a force on both ends, finishing with 17 points and providing a disruptive defensive presence. Houser, a 6-foot-9, 255-pound center from Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, also tallied 17 points, using his size effectively inside.
Christian Bliss, a guard from Queens, New York, orchestrated the offense with precision, contributing 15 points and facilitating the action for his teammates throughout the night.
Facing a daunting deficit, Saint Peter’s emerged from the locker room with renewed vigor. The Peacocks switched to a more aggressive defensive scheme, which immediately paid dividends. They forced several early second-half turnovers and began to chip away at the lead with a barrage of three-pointers.
The catalyst for the comeback was Brent Bland. The 6-foot-3 guard from Wheatley Heights, New York, caught fire from beyond the arc, scoring 21 points, with the majority coming during the Peacocks’ second-half surge. His consecutive three-pointers, the latter part of a four-point play, electrified the Saint Peter’s bench and cut a once-insurmountable lead down to single digits, sending a wave of tension through the home crowd.
Bland’s backcourt mate, TJ Robinson of Paterson, New Jersey, facilitated the rally, dishing out eight assists while directing the offense and creating open looks for his shooters. Bryce Eaton, a guard from Detroit, added 13 points, including key second-half baskets that kept the pressure on the Blue Hens.
Despite the Peacocks outscoring Delaware 44-32 in the second half and holding the Hens to a more pedestrian 39% shooting after the break, the first-half hole proved too deep. Every time Saint Peter’s threatened to close the gap entirely, Delaware responded with a critical basket. A key three-pointer from Tyler Houser with under 10 minutes to play and a driving layup from Christian Bliss in the final minutes helped stem the tide and keep the Blue Hens in control.
The statistical sheet illustrated the tale of two halves. Delaware finished the game shooting 53.8% from the field and an impressive 52.4% from three-point range. Saint Peter’s, after its cold start, ended at 41.3% overall but was hampered by its 26 first-half points. The Peacocks did win the turnover battle, forcing 13 Delaware miscues while committing only eight, but they were ultimately undone by the Hens’ superior shooting efficiency and first-half explosion.
The victory provides a much-needed boost for Delaware as it looks to build momentum. The Blue Hens are scheduled to face Southern Illinois on Monday in Jacksonville, Florida. Saint Peter’s, showing clear signs of resilience, will aim to even its record when it returns home to host Massachusetts-Lowell on Saturday.
