McNeese State Routs Louisiana-Lafayette in Home Opener
LAKE CHARLES, La. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive efficiency and defensive pressure, the McNeese State Cowboys dominated the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns, cruising to an 88-62 victory in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night at Burton Coliseum.
A crowd of 4,333 watched as the Cowboys improved to 3-1 on the young season, while the Ragin’ Cajuns fell to 1-3.
The game was decided by a stifling first-half performance from the home team. McNeese State built a 37-16 lead by halftime, holding Louisiana-Lafayette to a frigid shooting performance. The Ragin’ Cajuns managed just 18 field goal attempts in the opening period, making only five, and committed 10 turnovers that the Cowboys converted into 15 points.

They shot 53% from the field and a blistering 48% from beyond the arc, connecting on 10 of 21 three-point attempts. They also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 30 of 39 attempts.
In contrast, Louisiana-Lafayette struggled to find any offensive rhythm, posting an offensive rating of 95.5. While they improved after halftime, scoring 46 second-half points, the early deficit was far too large to overcome. The Ragin’ Cajuns finished the game shooting 33% from the floor and 27% from three-point range.

For Louisiana-Lafayette, Dorian Finister delivered a standout individual performance in the losing effort. The 6-foot-5 guard from New Orleans scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed five rebounds in 36 minutes. De’Vion Lavergne, a 6-foot-3 guard from Melville, Louisiana, added 11 points and five rebounds. Jaxon Olvera of Houston contributed 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
The statistical disparity told the story of the game. McNeese State generated 25 points off Louisiana-Lafayette’s turnovers, compared to just 11 for the visitors. The Cowboys also held a significant advantage in fastbreak points, outscoring the Ragin’ Cajuns 12-4.
McNeese State will look to build on this momentum as they travel to Parry Sound, Ontario, for a pair of games, facing George Washington on Sunday and Murray State on Monday. Louisiana-Lafayette continues a challenging road stretch, heading to California to take on Stanford on Tuesday before facing Santa Clara and UC Davis.
