Virginia Military Institute at Missouri
COLUMBIA, Mo. (Interstat) — The Missouri Tigers showcased their offensive firepower and defensive dominance in a commanding 106-68 victory over the Virginia Military Institute Keydets in a non-conference men’s basketball game Sunday at Mizzou Arena.
Playing before a crowd of 7,986, the undefeated Tigers improved to 3-0, while the Keydets fell to 2-1.
Missouri seized control early, building a 50-40 halftime lead before exploding for 56 points in the second half. The Tigers’ offensive efficiency was staggering, scoring 106 points on 76 possessions for an offensive rating of 140.2. By contrast, VMI managed an offensive rating of just 90.1 on the same number of possessions.
The disparity in shooting was stark. Missouri connected on 37 of 65 field goal attempts, a 56.9 percent clip, while VMI struggled, making just 19 of 57 shots for 33.3 percent. The Keydets relied heavily on the three-pointer, attempting 42 and making 15, but it was not enough to keep pace.
Mark Mitchell led a balanced Tigers attack with a double-double, scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Anthony Robinson added 20 points and four assists, and Jayden Stone contributed 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists. The Tigers’ depth was on full display as Jacob Crews scored 14 points off the bench and Sebastian Mack added 14.
For VMI, TJ Johnson turned in a heroic individual effort, pouring in 31 points and securing seven rebounds. Mario Tatum provided secondary scoring with 15 points.
Missouri dominated the glass, outrebounding VMI 44-28 and pulling down 17 offensive rebounds to VMI’s seven. The Tigers also forced 16 Keydet turnovers while committing only 11 of their own, leading to a 13-8 advantage in steals.
The game was never in doubt after the opening minutes, as Missouri’s size, speed, and execution proved overwhelming. The Tigers consistently generated high-percentage shots in the paint and capitalized on second-chance opportunities, while their defense stifled VMI’s offense outside of Johnson’s scoring outburst.
The victory extends Missouri’s strong start to the season, which includes wins over Howard and Southeast Missouri State. VMI, which entered the game with decisive wins over JWU Charlotte and Southern Indiana, will look to regroup in its next contest.
Missouri next hosts Minnesota on Wednesday, while Virginia Military Institute returns home to face Virginia-Lynchburg the same afternoon.
