Alabama Outlasts Auburn in High-Scoring SEC Showdown
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Interstat) — In a game defined by explosive runs and a relentless offensive display, the Alabama Crimson Tide used a dominant first-half performance to secure a 96-84 victory over the rival Auburn Tigers in a Southeastern Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at a raucous Coleman Coliseum.
A crowd of 13,474 watched as Alabama, improving to 23-8 overall, built a commanding 19-point halftime lead and then weathered a fierce second-half rally from Auburn, which fell to 16-15. The win completed a regular-season sweep for the Crimson Tide, who also won in Auburn last month.
The most critical phase of the contest unfolded in the opening 20 minutes, where Alabama’s offensive firepower proved overwhelming. The Crimson Tide raced out to an 8-0 lead within the first three minutes, capitalizing on early Auburn turnovers and missed shots. While Auburn’s Tahaad Pettiford briefly stemmed the tide with a three-pointer, Alabama responded with a devastating 13-2 run, fueled by the dynamic play of guard Labaron Philon and forward Amari Allen.
Philon, a native of Mobile, Alabama, was instrumental in building the insurmountable lead. He scored 13 of his 21 points in the first half, repeatedly attacking the rim for layups and dishing out four assists. His backcourt partner, Aden Holloway of Charlotte, North Carolina, matched him with 21 points, many coming during the first-half barrage. Alabama’s ball movement and interior finishing were clinical, as they shot a blistering percentage from the floor and assisted on numerous baskets to take a 50-31 advantage into the break.
Auburn, however, refused to capitulate. The Tigers emerged from halftime with renewed defensive energy and began chipping away at the deficit. Led by the scoring of Kevin Overton, who finished with a team-high 24 points, and Pettiford, who added 19, Auburn methodically worked the margin down. The Tigers’ second-half effort saw them outscore Alabama 53-46, as they finally found an offensive rhythm from both inside and beyond the arc.
The Tigers’ comeback attempt reached its peak midway through the second half. A three-pointer from Overton, followed by a driving layup from Pettiford, cut the Alabama lead to single digits and forced a timeout from the Crimson Tide with the momentum squarely on Auburn’s side. The visitors continued to press, with Keyshawn Hall contributing 13 points and Elyjah Freeman adding 11, but could never fully close the gap.
Every time Auburn threatened, Alabama had an answer. When the lead was trimmed to nine, London Jemison, who provided a crucial spark off the bench with 11 points, converted a tip-in. When it was narrowed again, Holloway or Philon would connect on a timely jumper or drive. The final blow came from Allen, whose consistent interior play yielded 16 points and key rebounds, including a tip-in with just over five minutes remaining that pushed the lead back to 13 and effectively sealed the game.
Defensively, Alabama’s length at the rim was a significant factor. Aiden Sherrell of Detroit blocked three shots and altered several others, while Allen and others contributed to a team effort that disrupted Auburn’s offense for long stretches, particularly in the decisive first half. Auburn’s KeShawn Murphy countered with two blocks of his own and eight points.
The victory solidified Alabama’s position heading into the postseason, showcasing the high-octane offense that has been its trademark. For Auburn, the loss underscored a season of narrow margins, but the spirited second-half rally provided a glimpse of the team’s potential. The Tigers will look to regroup as both teams now turn their attention to the upcoming SEC tournament.
