Montana State Rides Strong First Half to Road Win Over Northern Arizona
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Interstat) — A dominant first-half defensive performance by Montana State paved the way for a decisive road victory Monday night, as the Bobcats built a substantial early lead and held off a second-half surge from Northern Arizona for a 76-65 win in a Big Sky Conference men’s basketball game at Walkup Skydome.
The Bobcats, improving to 18-13 overall, seized control from the opening tip. Montana State scored the game’s first nine points, highlighted by an early layup from Christian King and a three-pointer from Seth Amunrud. The defensive intensity was equally impressive, as the Bobcats blocked three shots and forced several turnovers in the opening minutes, stifling the Lumberjacks’ offense completely.
Northern Arizona, which fell to 10-21, struggled immensely to find any offensive rhythm before halftime. The Lumberjacks did not reach double figures until a Diego Campisano jump shot with 8:29 remaining in the half made the score 23-11. Montana State’s defense consistently disrupted passing lanes and protected the rim, limiting Northern Arizona to just 25 points on poor shooting in the first half. The Bobcats, meanwhile, executed efficiently at the other end, taking a 36-25 lead into the break.
The most important part of the game was Montana State’s immediate and overwhelming start, which established a tone of defensive authority and offensive confidence that Northern Arizona could never fully overcome. By building a double-digit cushion in the first ten minutes, the Bobcats forced the struggling Lumberjacks into a chase mode for the entire contest, a pursuit that proved too steep despite a valiant second-half effort.
Northern Arizona emerged from halftime with renewed energy, primarily behind the scoring of guard Oakland Fort. The Phoenix native caught fire, scoring 20 of his game-high 26 points after intermission. A driving layup by Fort with 1:48 to play cut the Montana State lead to 58-56, capping a sustained rally that brought the sparse crowd of 711 to life and threatened to undo the Bobcats’ earlier work.
Montana State, however, demonstrated the poise of a team battling for postseason positioning. Immediately following Fort’s basket, the Bobcats’ Jaden Steppe answered with a crucial layup to push the lead back to four. On the ensuing possession, Howie Keene blocked a three-point attempt by Campisano, a pivotal defensive stop that preserved the momentum. Steppe was then fouled and made two free throws, extending the lead to six and effectively sealing the game in the final minute.
Christian King led a balanced Montana State attack with 18 points, while Steppe added 16 and Jed Miller contributed 13. The Bobcats also received a significant interior contribution from Chris Hodges, who scored 10 points and recorded two blocks in just 13 minutes of action. For Northern Arizona, Fort’s 26-point outburst was supplemented by 14 points from Diego Campisano and nine points and six assists from Chris Komin.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Montana State, which also defeated Northern Arizona 77-68 in Bozeman on Jan. 3. The Bobcats have now won three of their last four games as they head into the conference tournament. Northern Arizona, despite the late rally, has lost three consecutive games.
