Montana Holds Off Portland State in Big Sky Showdown
MISSOULA, Mont. (Interstat) — In a game defined by runs and resilience, the Montana Grizzlies leaned on the hot hand of Money Williams to fend off a persistent Portland State squad for a 74-68 victory in a Big Sky Conference men’s basketball clash Saturday afternoon at Dahlberg Arena.
A crowd of 3,078 watched as Williams, a 6-foot-4 guard from Oakland, California, poured in 27 points and dished out seven assists to lead the Grizzlies. His performance was the catalyst for Montana, which improved to 16-14 overall. Portland State, despite a valiant 40-point second half, fell to 18-10.
The game’s most critical sequence unfolded late in the second half, transforming a tense contest into Montana’s control. With just over six minutes remaining and the Grizzlies holding a 59-56 lead, the game hung in the balance. Portland State’s Keyon Kensie, who finished with 16 points, missed a layup that could have cut the deficit to one. Montana secured the rebound, and on the ensuing possession, Williams found Grant Kepley for a layup to push the lead to five.
After a Portland State turnover, Williams then orchestrated a decisive 7-0 run almost single-handedly. He drove for a layup to make it 63-56, then, following a Vikings miss, assisted on a Tyler Thompson three-pointer from the wing. On Montana’s next trip, Williams again attacked the rim for another layup, capping the burst and giving the Grizzlies their largest lead at 68-56 with 5:30 to play. That flurry proved insurmountable, as Portland State could not draw closer than six points the rest of the way.
The game began with Montana asserting early dominance. Williams scored the first five points and assisted on another basket as the Grizzlies sprinted to a 9-0 lead before the Vikings registered their first field goal nearly three minutes in. Portland State struggled offensively for much of the first half, shooting just 34% from the field, but managed to stay within striking distance, trailing 30-28 at the break thanks to a late three-pointer from Isaiah Williams.
The second half became a shootout. Portland State guard Jaylin Henderson, who led the Vikings with 20 points and six assists, willed his team back into the game. His backcourt counterpart, Williams, answered nearly every Viking push. When Henderson hit a three-pointer to pull Portland State within 45-41, Williams immediately found Brooklyn Hicks for a three on the other end. When Kensie converted a three-point play to cut it to 56-53, Williams again responded, feeding Tyler Isaak for a three-pointer to restore a six-point cushion just before the game-sealing run.
Statistical disparities told the story of Montana’s efficiency. The Grizzlies shot 49.1% from the field (26 of 53) and 40.9% from three-point range (9 of 22). Portland State, meanwhile, was hampered by a 39.1% shooting afternoon (25 of 64) and a 26.5% mark from beyond the arc (9 of 34). The Vikings compensated with hustle, winning the offensive rebounding battle 11-5, but Montana’s superior shot-making and a 13-of-21 performance from the free-throw line, compared to Portland State’s 9 of 15, provided the necessary margin.
Beyond Williams’ standout afternoon, Montana received balanced contributions. Thompson, Hicks, Isaak, and Kepley each scored nine points. For Portland State, Kensie’s 16 points and eight rebounds were pivotal, but the Vikings’ offense often sputtered outside of Henderson’s creation.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Montana over Portland State, having also won 64-60 in Portland on Jan. 29. It also marked a bounce-back for the Grizzlies after two consecutive road losses last week. Portland State has now dropped two straight following a three-game winning streak.
Montana, which entered the game as a 1.5-point favorite, outperformed its 60.8% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system. The total points scored, 142, fell just under the over/under line of 143.5.
Both teams conclude their regular seasons on Monday. Montana travels to face Northern Colorado, while Portland State returns home to host Weber State.
