Missouri Dominates Early, Cruises to Road Win Over Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. (Interstat) — The Missouri Tigers delivered a dominant first-half performance and cruised to an 88-64 victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs in a Southeastern Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Humphrey Coliseum.

From the opening tip, Missouri established a commanding presence, building a 31-point halftime lead that Mississippi State never threatened. The Tigers improved to 20-9 overall and 9-7 in the SEC, while the Bulldogs fell to 11-16 and 3-11.

The most important part of the game was Missouri’s overwhelming start, which effectively decided the contest before the intermission. The Tigers opened the game on a 13-0 run, capitalizing on early Mississippi State miscues and setting a physical, defensive tone. The Bulldogs did not score until a Josh Hubbard layup with 17:04 remaining in the first half, by which point Missouri had already built a double-digit advantage.

Missouri’s first-half execution was nearly flawless. The Tigers shot 54.5% from the field before the break and converted 13 of 14 free throws. Defensively, they forced 11 Mississippi State turnovers, which they turned into 15 points. The Bulldogs managed just 23 points on 30% shooting in the opening period, struggling to find any offensive rhythm against Missouri’s active defense.

Seven-foot sophomore Shawn Phillips was instrumental in the early onslaught, scoring 10 of his 16 points in the first half. His work on the interior, including two early blocks and multiple offensive rebounds, set the pace. Mark Mitchell led all scorers with 17 points, and Anthony Robinson added 13 off the bench, with many of their contributions coming during the decisive opening stretch.

Mississippi State showed more fight after halftime, outscoring Missouri 41-34 in the second period, but the deficit was far too large to overcome. The Bulldogs shot 50% from the field after the break, led by Hubbard’s 16 points and 12 points from Quincy Ballard. King Grace provided a spark with nine points, two blocks and two steals off the bench.

Missouri, however, maintained its efficiency throughout. The Tigers finished the game shooting 50.8% from the floor and an impressive 83.3% from the free-throw line. They outrebounded Mississippi State 34-28 and scored 17 points off 17 Bulldog turnovers. Despite committing 12 turnovers of their own, Missouri’s offensive rating of 123.2 points per 100 possessions underscored a highly effective night.

TO Barrett orchestrated the offense with five assists to go with 10 points, while Jayden Stone contributed eight points, four assists and steady backcourt play over 32 minutes. Trent Pierce and Trent Burns each chipped in 10 points, showcasing Missouri’s balanced scoring attack.

For Mississippi State, the loss extended a difficult conference campaign. The Bulldogs shot 49.1% overall but were hampered by 5-of-19 shooting from three-point range and 7-of-13 shooting from the foul line. They also recorded only six offensive rebounds, limiting second-chance opportunities against a taller Missouri front line.

The game was a reversal of the teams’ previous meeting on Jan. 31, which Missouri won 84-79 in a much tighter contest. The Tigers have now won three of their last four games. Mississippi State has lost four of its last five.

Missouri next travels to face Oklahoma on Tuesday. Mississippi State will head to Florida, also on Tuesday.

An announced crowd of 7,012 watched the game at Humphrey Coliseum.
