Bryant Pulls Away From NJIT for America East Victory
SMITHFIELD, R.I. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, the Bryant Bulldogs used a dominant second-half performance to pull away from the NJIT Highlanders for a 69-52 victory in an America East Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Chace Athletic Center.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 722, saw the Bulldogs improve to 9-20 overall, while NJIT moved to an even 15-15. The result flipped the script from the teams’ previous meeting on Jan. 19, a 79-55 NJIT win.
The most critical phase of the contest came early in the second half, when Bryant transformed a narrow two-point halftime lead into a commanding double-digit advantage. Leading 32-30 at the break, the Bulldogs opened the second period with a decisive 15-4 run over the first seven minutes. The surge was fueled by stifling defense and the offensive prowess of guard Timofei Rudovskii.
Bryant’s defense, which recorded eight blocks and seven steals for the game, completely disrupted NJIT’s rhythm. The Highlanders, who shot just 32.7% from the floor for the game, were held to 22 points in the second half on 7-of-28 shooting. The Bulldogs repeatedly turned NJIT misses and 10 total turnovers into transition opportunities, extending their lead and never allowing the Highlanders to mount a serious threat.
Rudovskii, a 6-foot-9 guard from Moscow, was the catalyst, finishing with a game-high 20 points. He scored seven points during the pivotal second-half run, including a three-pointer on the first possession after halftime and a driving layup that pushed the lead to 41-34. He added four rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal, impacting the game on both ends.
He was supported by a strong inside-outside combination. Forward Keegan Harvey, a 6-11 sophomore from Newcastle, Australia, contributed 16 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Guard Ty Tabales of Worcester, Massachusetts, added 14 points, four assists, two blocks and two steals. Forward Daniel Akoue provided a key spark off the bench with nine points and two blocks in just 13 minutes.
For NJIT, guard Sebastian Robinson led the way with 15 points, while Ari Fulton added 10. Guard David Bolden scored nine points. The Highlanders’ offense never found consistency, managing only three made three-pointers on 15 attempts and posting an offensive rating of 77.6 points per 100 possessions, a season-low mark.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair featuring 10 lead changes. NJIT built an early 9-2 lead behind active defense, forcing four quick Bryant turnovers. The Bulldogs responded with a 12-2 run of their own, highlighted by two three-pointers from Harvey. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half, with Bryant taking its slim lead into the locker room after Rudovskii’s driving layup in the final minute.
Any hope of a similar back-and-forth in the second half was extinguished by Bryant’s defensive intensity. The Bulldogs held NJIT without a field goal for stretches of over four minutes on two separate occasions, methodically building their lead to as many as 17 points in the final minutes.
Statistically, Bryant shot 44.4% from the field and connected on nine three-pointers. NJIT won the turnover battle, forcing 13 while committing 10, and had 10 steals, but could not overcome its profound shooting woes. The Bulldogs also held a significant advantage in blocked shots, 8-2, protecting the rim effectively throughout.
The game’s total points, 121, fell well under the pregame over/under line of 139.5, underscoring the defensive nature of the contest. Despite being a pregame underdog by 2.5 points, Bryant controlled the tempo and execution after halftime to secure the conference win.
NJIT will look to rebound when it hosts Maryland-Baltimore County on Tuesday. Bryant travels to face New Hampshire, also on Tuesday.
