East Tennessee State at Mercer

Preview: East Tennessee State at Mercer

MACON, Ga. (Interstat) — A pivotal Southern Conference men’s basketball matchup with postseason implications is set for Saturday when the Mercer Bears host the East Tennessee State Buccaneers at Hawkins Arena.

East Tennessee State (21-9) enters looking to rebound from a midweek home loss to Wofford, 72-69, which snapped a strong stretch of play. The Buccaneers had won six of their previous seven, including an 87-75 road victory at UNC Greensboro. Mercer (18-12) also looks to bounce back after a 78-74 road loss at Western Carolina on Wednesday.

The game features a compelling backcourt duel between two of the league’s top scorers. ETSU’s Blake Barkley has been a consistent force, averaging 14.3 points over his last seven games, including a 22-point, 12-rebound performance in a win at VMI on Feb. 7. For Mercer, guard Baraka Okojie has been on a scoring tear, averaging 22.6 points over his last eight contests. He dropped 25 points in a win over Samford on Feb. 21 and 22 in the recent loss to Western Carolina.

The teams met earlier this season in Johnson City, with ETSU securing a 77-71 victory on Jan. 3. The Buccaneers have found success on the road in conference play, while Mercer has been strong at home, boasting a 12-3 record at Hawkins Arena this season.

With the conference tournament approaching, both teams are jockeying for seeding. ETSU can solidify a top-tier finish with a road win, while Mercer aims to enhance its resume and avenge the January loss. The outcome will likely hinge on which star guard can lead their team and which squad can better execute down the stretch after both suffered narrow defeats in their last outings.

Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. EST.
