Mercer Holds Off East Tennessee State Rally in Southern Conference Showdown
MACON, Ga. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a blistering first-half offensive display and a gritty second-half defensive response, the Mercer Bears weathered a furious comeback attempt by the East Tennessee State Buccaneers to secure an 82-76 victory in a Southern Conference men’s basketball clash Saturday afternoon at Hawkins Arena.
A crowd of 2,317 watched Mercer (19-12, 12-6) build a commanding 49-35 halftime lead behind a scorching shooting performance, only to see East Tennessee State (21-10, 13-5) claw back to within a single possession in the final minutes before the Bears sealed the game at the free-throw line.
The most critical phase of the contest was unquestionably Mercer’s explosive first-half offensive execution, which established a cushion the Buccaneers spent the entire second half trying to erase. The Bears shot a remarkable 11 for 21 from three-point range in the game, with the majority of that damage coming before intermission. They assisted on six of their 11 made threes and committed only nine turnovers, posting an offensive rating of 124.1 points per 100 possessions.
Zaire Williams, a guard from Brooklyn, New York, spearheaded the Mercer attack with a game-high 23 points, including three first-half three-pointers. His backcourt mate, Baraka Okojie of Brampton, Canada, orchestrated the offense with eight assists and added 14 points, frequently finding teammates for open looks against an initially disorganized ETSU defense.
East Tennessee State, which entered the game with a 53% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, found itself in a deep hole largely due to Mercer’s early efficiency. The Buccaneers shot just 28 for 62 from the floor overall and were outscored by 14 points in the opening period despite a relatively clean seven-turnover performance.
The second half, however, became a testament to ETSU’s resilience. Switching defensive gears, the Buccaneers held Mercer to 33 points after the break, forcing tougher shots and capitalizing on transition opportunities. They whittled the lead down to 74-72 with just over four minutes remaining after a Blake Barkley layup. Barkley, a forward from Morgantown, West Virginia, led ETSU with 16 points and three assists.
But each time the Buccaneers threatened, Mercer found an answer. After Barkley’s basket made it a two-point game, the Bears’ Quinton Perkins of Dallas, Texas, who finished with 12 points, responded with a crucial three-pointer off an Okojie assist on the ensuing possession to push the lead back to five. ETSU would get no closer than three points the rest of the way.
The final minutes evolved into a free-throw contest, with Mercer attempting 36 for the game, making 23. The Bears’ ability to draw fouls and convert down the stretch, including key makes from Okojie and Connor Serven in the final 31 seconds, ultimately closed the door on the comeback.
For East Tennessee State, Brian Taylor, a guard from St. Louis, Missouri, contributed 15 points, while Isaiah Sutherland of Orlando, Florida, provided a second-half spark with nine points, all from beyond the arc, in just 10 minutes of play.
The game’s total of 158 points narrowly surpassed the over/under line of 153.5. The result snapped a two-game winning streak for the Buccaneers, who had defeated Mercer 77-71 in Johnson City back on Jan. 3, and provided the Bears with a momentum-building win as both teams look ahead to the conference tournament.
