Iowa Falls to Penn State on Late Free Throws in Tight Contest
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (Interstat) — In a game defined by razor-thin margins and a chaotic final sequence, Josh Reed’s career-high 25 points propelled Penn State to a stunning 71-69 upset victory over Iowa on Saturday afternoon at Bryce Jordan Center. The Nittany Lions, who entered the contest with a 12-17 record, defied a nearly 80 percent pregame projection favoring the Hawkeyes by executing with remarkable efficiency down the stretch and capitalizing on a critical Iowa turnover in the closing seconds.
The contest was a study in contrasting styles. Iowa, now 20-9, leveraged its physicality to dominate the glass, securing a 10-2 advantage in offensive rebounds and forcing 15 Penn State turnovers. However, the Nittany Lions countered with near-flawless shooting, converting 64.1 percent from the field and 60 percent from three-point range. Penn State’s offensive rating of 119.1 on 60 possessions narrowly edged Iowa’s 118.4 on 58 possessions, underscoring the game’s offensive precision.
Iowa established an early rhythm, leading 38-34 at halftime behind Cooper Koch’s outside shooting. The Hawkeye forward finished with 18 points, connecting on five three-pointers. Bennett Stirtz orchestrated the Iowa offense with 16 points and five assists, while Cam Manyawu provided energy off the bench with eight points and multiple key defensive plays.
Penn State’s offense, however, proved relentless. Reed, the 6-foot-8 forward from Atlanta, was the catalyst, scoring from all three levels. He was complemented by guard Freddie Dilione V, who added 15 points, including three three-pointers. The Nittany Lions’ 7-foot Croatian center Ivan Juric anchored the interior with 11 points and nine rebounds, helping his team weather Iowa’s rebounding assault.
The second half evolved into a tense back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than six points. With the score knotted at 69 and under 20 seconds remaining, Iowa had possession with a chance to hold for a final shot. The most important sequence of the game unfolded as the Hawkeyes’ inbounds play disintegrated. Isaia Howard was called for a foul on Dilione V away from the ball with just one second on the clock, sending the Penn State guard to the free-throw line for two shots.
Dilione V, under immense pressure, calmly sank both free throws to put Penn State ahead 71-69. Iowa, out of timeouts, could only manage a desperation heave that fell short as the buzzer sounded, sealing the Nittany Lions’ victory before an announced crowd of 6,922.
Despite the loss, Iowa’s defensive activity was evident with seven steals and only seven turnovers of their own. Kael Combs contributed eight points for the Hawkeyes. For Penn State, Kayden Mingo scored nine points and Dominick Stewart added eight, with Stewart also recording a crucial blocked shot in the second half.
The result marked a significant deviation from the pregame expectations, as Iowa had been installed as a 9.5-point favorite. The combined point total of 138 fell well under the over/under line of 146.5, a testament to the game’s deliberate pace and high-percentage shooting rather than high volume.
Iowa, which had won four of its last five games coming in, will look to regroup when it hosts Michigan on Thursday, March 5. Penn State, which snapped a two-game skid, will seek to build on this momentum when it welcomes Ohio State on Wednesday, March 4.
