Lipscomb Edges Eastern Kentucky in ASUN Thriller
RICHMOND, Ky. (Interstat) — In a game defined by offensive rebounds, defensive stands, and a final, decisive three-pointer, the Lipscomb Bisons edged the Eastern Kentucky Colonels 80-77 in a tense ASUN Conference men’s basketball matchup Saturday afternoon at McBrayer Arena.
The victory improved Lipscomb to 19-12 on the season, while Eastern Kentucky fell to 11-20.
The most critical sequence of the contest unfolded in the final 30 seconds. Trailing 77-75 after Eastern Kentucky’s MJ Williams sank two free throws with 2:03 remaining, Lipscomb needed a stop. They got it when the Colonels’ Jackson Holt committed a turnover with 1:08 to play. Following a timeout, Lipscomb worked the ball to its center, Grant Asman, who delivered a clutch three-pointer from the top of the key with just nine seconds on the clock, giving the Bisons a 78-77 lead.
Eastern Kentucky had a chance to answer, but Williams’ driving layup attempt missed with five seconds left. Lipscomb’s Mateo Esmeraldo secured the defensive rebound, was fouled, and calmly made both free throws to seal the three-point victory.
The game was a back-and-forth affair throughout, featuring 13 ties and 14 lead changes. Neither team led by more than six points. Lipscomb took a narrow 42-41 lead into halftime behind balanced scoring, while Eastern Kentucky stayed close thanks to hot three-point shooting, finishing 15 of 36 from beyond the arc compared to Lipscomb’s 14 of 42.
Williams was spectacular in defeat for the Colonels, scoring 22 points and dishing out seven assists. Jalen Cooper added 17 points and Jackson Holt contributed 11, all in the second half. Lipscomb countered with a more diversified attack. Asman, a 6-foot-10 center from Kimberly, Wisconsin, led the way with 17 points, five assists and two blocks, including a pivotal swat on Cooper with under four minutes to play. Ross Candelino and Titas Sargiunas each scored 15 points, while Ethan Duncan added 10 points and four assists.
While the final shot decided it, the game’s outcome was heavily influenced by two key statistical disparities. Lipscomb committed only five turnovers, forcing Eastern Kentucky into 13. The Bisons also capitalized on those mistakes, scoring 15 points off turnovers. Furthermore, Lipscomb’s ball movement proved superior, recording five assists to Eastern Kentucky’s two, a telling figure in a closely contested game.
Both teams were efficient offensively, with Lipscomb posting an offensive rating of 119.0 on 67 possessions and Eastern Kentucky at 117.3 on 66 possessions. The Colonels won the battle on the offensive glass, 14-13, and shot better from the free-throw line, making 12 of 14 attempts to Lipscomb’s 6 of 11. However, Lipscomb’s ability to protect the ball and create just enough extra opportunities proved the difference.
The win gave Lipscomb a regular-season sweep of the series, having defeated Eastern Kentucky 75-61 in Nashville on Feb. 11. It also provided a positive conclusion to the Bisons’ regular season as they head into the conference tournament. For Eastern Kentucky, the narrow loss encapsulated a season of near misses, with nine of their 20 defeats coming by six points or fewer or in overtime.
