Gauchos Defeat Highlanders Behind Sensley, Mahaney in Big West Matchup
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos used a dominant first-half performance to secure a 70-59 victory over the visiting UC Riverside Highlanders in a Big West Conference men’s basketball game Thursday night at the Thunderdome.
A crowd of 2,026 watched as the Gauchos, led by a combined 40 points from Zion Sensley and Aidan Mahaney, built a 12-point halftime lead and then weathered a more competitive second half to improve to 18-11 overall. The Highlanders, who shot a frigid 2 for 16 from three-point range, fell to 9-21.
The most important stretch of the game came in the final minutes of the first half, where UC Santa Barbara established control. After UC Riverside had closed to within four points at 22-18 following a three-pointer from De’Undrae Perteete with just over seven minutes remaining, the Gauchos closed the period on a decisive 17-9 run. Sensley and Mahaney were the catalysts, with Sensley hitting a critical three-pointer and Mahaney scoring eight points in the final 1:29, including two three-pointers in the last 41 seconds. His deep shot at the buzzer sent the teams to the locker rooms with Santa Barbara leading 39-27, a margin that proved insurmountable.
The Highlanders, who entered the game as heavy underdogs according to pregame projections, never found a consistent offensive rhythm. They were hampered by 11 turnovers and an offensive rating of just 86.8 points per 100 possessions. While they managed to outscore the Gauchos 32-31 in the second half and trimmed the deficit to single digits on several occasions, they could not mount a sustained threat. Key sequences, including a blocked layup by Evans Kipruto and critical free throws from Sensley in the final 18 seconds, extinguished any hope of a late comeback.
UC Santa Barbara’s efficiency, posting an offensive rating of 102.5 on the same number of possessions as Riverside, was the difference. The Gauchos also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 19 of 28 attempts compared to Riverside’s 17 of 21. Defensively, the Gauchos forced 11 turnovers and converted them into key transition opportunities.
Sensley, a 6-foot-8 forward from San Carlos, California, finished with 19 points and was a force on the glass with seven defensive rebounds. Mahaney, a guard from Lafayette, California, added 21 points and three assists, providing crucial scoring bursts. For the Highlanders, Andrew Henderson of Los Angeles led the way with 17 points, while BJ Kolly of Everett, Washington, contributed 16 points and Marqui Worthy of Anaheim added 15.
The game’s tempo was deliberate, with both teams registering 68 possessions. The total score of 129 points fell well under the pregame over/under line of 144.5, underscoring the defensive nature of the contest. UC Santa Barbara’s victory completed a regular-season sweep of the Highlanders, having also won in Riverside on Feb. 12.
UC Riverside will look to rebound quickly when it hosts Cal State Northridge on Saturday. UC Santa Barbara, aiming to solidify its position in the conference standings, travels to face UC Irvine, also on Saturday.
