Morehead State Edges Southern Indiana in Final Seconds
HALDEMAN, Ky. (Interstat) — In a game defined by its final, frantic seconds, George Marshall calmly sank two free throws with six seconds remaining to lift the Morehead State Eagles to a 64-63 victory over the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles in an Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball thriller on Tuesday night at E.T. Johnson Arena.
The contest, witnessed by 1,567 fans, was a tense, back-and-forth affair that saw 11 lead changes and neither team lead by more than eight points. It culminated in a dramatic finish that saw Southern Indiana, which had fought back from a second-half deficit, take a one-point lead in the final half-minute, only to see it vanish at the foul line.
The most critical sequence began with Southern Indiana clinging to a 63-62 lead after Steven Clay’s clutch 3-pointer from the wing, assisted by Sheridan Sharp, with just 20 seconds left on the clock. Morehead State, eschewing a timeout, pushed the ball upcourt. The ball found its way to Marshall, the game’s leading scorer, who drove aggressively into the lane along the left baseline. As he elevated for a potential go-ahead shot, he was fouled by Southern Indiana’s Cardell Bailey with six ticks remaining.
The arena fell silent as Marshall, a 6-foot-4 guard from Jackson, Mississippi, stepped to the line. He coolly drained the first free throw to tie the game at 63. After a Southern Indiana timeout intended to ice him, Marshall sank the second to put the Eagles ahead 64-63.
Southern Indiana had one final chance. With no timeouts remaining, they inbounded to Sharp, who raced up the right side of the court. His driving attempt in traffic was heavily contested and missed as time expired, sealing the heartbreaking loss for the visiting Screaming Eagles.
The game was a defensive struggle for long stretches, with both teams shooting under 40 percent from the floor. The first half ended in a 29-29 deadlock, setting the stage for the tense second period. Morehead State built a modest lead early in the second half, going up 39-31 after a 3-pointer from Marshall and a hook shot from Anouar Mellouk. Southern Indiana, however, displayed the resilience that had earned them two straight road wins coming into the game, chipping away at the deficit behind the scoring of Bailey and Clay.
Marshall finished with a game-high 22 points for Morehead State, including the decisive free throws, in 33 minutes of action. He was supported by Mellouk, the 6-foot-8 forward from Amsterdam, Netherlands, who posted 12 points and five blocked shots, and Jon Carroll of Tallahassee, Florida, who added 12 points, many on crucial second-half putbacks.
Southern Indiana was led by Cardell Bailey’s 17 points. The 6-foot-6 wing from Detroit, Michigan, was instrumental in keeping the Screaming Eagles close, adding a block and a steal. Steven Clay of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, provided a significant spark off the bench with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Tolu Samuels of Chicago anchored the interior with nine points and three blocks in 37 minutes.
The loss was particularly gut-wrenching for Southern Indiana, which fell to 7-21 overall, as it mirrored their earlier season meeting. On Dec. 20, Morehead State defeated Southern Indiana 64-60 in overtime in Evansville. This narrow defeat also continued a trend of close losses for the Screaming Eagles, who have now dropped six games this season by five points or fewer.
Morehead State improved to 18-12 with the victory, solidifying its position in the upper tier of the OVC. The Eagles were projected as heavy favorites pregame, with statistical models giving them a 90.3 percent chance to win, but they were pushed to the absolute limit by a determined Southern Indiana squad that covered the 8.5-point spread.
The game’s total of 127 points fell well under the over/under line of 141.5, a testament to the rugged defense played by both sides throughout the night. In the end, however, the outcome was decided not by a defensive stop, but by a poised offensive player drawing a foul and converting under the most intense pressure.
Southern Indiana will look to rebound on the road at Arkansas-Little Rock this Saturday. Morehead State, meanwhile, travels to face the same Arkansas-Little Rock team on Thursday night.
