McCullum Leads East Tennessee State Past Chattanooga in Southern Conference Clash

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and a decisive disparity at the free-throw line, the East Tennessee State Buccaneers pulled away in the second half to defeat the Chattanooga Mocs 73-61 in a Southern Conference men’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at a raucous ETSU Athletic Center.

A crowd of 4,854 watched the Buccaneers, who entered as heavy favorites, improve to 19-7 overall and solidify their position near the top of the league standings. Chattanooga, struggling through a difficult season, fell to 10-16.

The most critical phase of the game unfolded over a tense five-minute stretch early in the second half. Leading just 36-34 with 17:47 remaining, East Tennessee State unleashed a 12-2 run that effectively broke the game open. The surge was fueled by the Buccaneers’ aggressive defense and their ability to draw fouls and convert at the charity stripe.

Jordan McCullum, the dynamic 6-foot-8 forward from Harriman, Tennessee, was the catalyst throughout the night and during this pivotal stretch. He scored 10 of his game-high 24 points during the run, including a pair of free throws that ignited it and a crucial 3-pointer from the wing that extended the lead to 43-36. The Buccaneers’ defense simultaneously clamped down, forcing three Chattanooga turnovers and several contested misses during the same span. When Cam Morris converted two free throws with 16:47 left, the Buccaneers’ lead had ballooned to 48-36, and the Mocs would never get closer than seven points the rest of the way.

The final score was not indicative of a shootout, but rather a grinding, physical contest. Both teams shot nearly identical percentages from the field—Chattanooga at 40% and East Tennessee State at 38.9%—and struggled from beyond the arc. The defining statistical chasm came at the free-throw line, where the Buccaneers attempted 35 free throws, making 26, compared to the Mocs’ 12 attempts, of which they made 10. East Tennessee State’s ability to attack the rim and draw contact, coupled with Chattanooga’s foul trouble, proved insurmountable.

McCullum’s efficient 24 points on 7-of-12 shooting, complemented by 9-of-12 shooting from the line, paced the Buccaneers. He received balanced support from Blake Barkley (11 points), Maki Johnson (10 points) and Cam Morris, who added 11 points, three blocks and relentless interior defense.

Chattanooga was led by guard Jordan Frison, who logged 36 minutes and finished with 15 points and five assists. Tate Darner added 13 points and Brennan Watkins contributed 11, but the Mocs’ offense often sputtered against ETSU’s active defense, which recorded seven steals and four blocks while committing only five turnovers themselves. Chattanooga turned the ball over 10 times, leading to 10 points for the Buccaneers.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair featuring eight lead changes. Chattanooga’s Jikari Johnson provided a spark off the bench with nine points, all in the opening period, helping the Mocs keep pace. A late layup by East Tennessee State’s Jaylen Smith just before the halftime buzzer gave the Buccaneers a 32-27 lead, a margin they would only expand after the break.

With the victory, East Tennessee State completed a regular-season sweep of its in-state rival, having also edged the Mocs 67-66 in Chattanooga on Jan. 21. The Buccaneers will look to maintain momentum when they host Samford on Saturday. Chattanooga, mired in a 2-5 stretch over its last seven games, returns home to face Western Carolina, also on Saturday.
