Denver’s Offensive Surge Buries North Dakota in Summit League Rematch
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Interstat) — Fueled by a dominant first-half performance and a trio of 20-point scorers, the Denver Pioneers authored a decisive 98-79 road victory over the North Dakota Fighting Hawks in a Summit League men’s basketball game Saturday at Engelstad Arena.
The game, played before a crowd of 2,238, was a stark reversal from the teams’ meeting just two weeks prior, when North Dakota emerged victorious. This time, Denver seized control from the opening tip and never relented, building a 43-27 halftime lead that proved insurmountable despite a more competitive second half.
The most critical phase of the contest was its opening ten minutes. Denver, particularly guard Zane Nelson, came out scorching. Nelson hit two three-pointers in the game’s first two minutes, part of a personal 8-point burst that staked the Pioneers to an early 11-2 lead. North Dakota, meanwhile, struggled profoundly from the perimeter, missing its first seven three-point attempts and compounding issues with early turnovers. Denver’s defensive presence, highlighted by an early block from Gabe Oldham on Greyson Uelmen, set a physical tone. The Pioneers’ efficient offense, which shot 58.3% from the field in the half, contrasted sharply with North Dakota’s 30% shooting, allowing Denver to build a 16-point cushion by intermission.
Denver’s offensive execution was a model of efficiency. The Pioneers scored 98 points on just 67 possessions, translating to an elite offensive rating of 146.4. They shot 58.3% from the field overall and were a near-perfect 19 of 23 from the free-throw line. While North Dakota won the battle in the paint 46-42 and committed only three turnovers, they were undone by frigid three-point shooting, connecting on just 3 of 21 attempts from beyond the arc.
The Pioneers were led by a balanced and potent offensive attack. Logan Kinsey, the team’s top star, posted 20 points and nine rebounds. He was joined by Carson Johnson, who orchestrated the offense with 22 points and seven assists, and Jeremiah Burke, who added 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Zane Nelson’s hot start contributed 17 points. For North Dakota, Greyson Uelmen shouldered the scoring load with 24 points, while Marley Curtis provided 14 points off the bench and George Natsvlishvili added 12.
North Dakota mounted a more concerted effort after halftime, scoring 52 points in the second period. A 7-0 run capped by a Uelmen three-pointer cut Denver’s lead to 63-54 with just over 10 minutes to play, marking the closest the Fighting Hawks had been since the opening minutes. However, Denver consistently answered every North Dakota push. Following that run, the Pioneers scored on their next four possessions, with Kinsey and Burke converting inside to stretch the lead back to 15 and effectively snuff out the comeback attempt.
The result defied pregame expectations, as North Dakota had been installed as a 3.5-point favorite and statistical models gave them a 77% probability of victory. The combined score of 177 points sailed over the posted over/under line of 161.5.
With the win, Denver evened its Summit League record and improved to 12-14 overall. North Dakota fell to 14-13 on the season. The Pioneers will host South Dakota State on Thursday, while North Dakota travels to face South Dakota on Wednesday.
