Oklahoma at Vanderbilt
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — A surging Vanderbilt team riding high in the Southeastern Conference standings will host a reeling Oklahoma squad seeking to end a lengthy skid when the Commodores and Sooners meet Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium.
Vanderbilt (19-3) enters the matchup ranked among the nation’s elite, having won 10 of its last 12 games. The Commodores are coming off a hard-fought 71-68 home victory over Mississippi on Jan. 31, where guard Tyler Tanner led the way with 24 points. Tanner has been a consistent force, averaging 20.4 points over his last seven contests, including a 24-point, 5-rebound, 5-assist performance in a dominant 88-56 win at Mississippi State on Jan. 24.
Oklahoma (11-11) arrives in Nashville mired in an eight-game losing streak, all against SEC opponents. The Sooners fell 94-78 at Kentucky on Wednesday. Their last win was an 86-70 victory over Mississippi on Jan. 3. Despite the team’s struggles, guard Xzayvier Brown has been a bright spot, scoring 21 points against Kentucky and averaging 18.1 points per game during the losing streak. He poured in a season-high 24 points in a loss to Florida on Jan. 13.
The game pits Vanderbilt’s formidable defense, which has held opponents to 68 points or fewer in eight wins this season, against an Oklahoma offense that has shown flashes but has struggled with consistency. The Sooners have lost four games during their skid by five points or fewer, including an 88-87 overtime heartbreaker at Missouri.
For Vanderbilt, a win would solidify its position atop the conference as it prepares for a tough road test at Auburn next Tuesday. Oklahoma is searching for a season-altering victory to stop its freefall before returning home to host Georgia on Feb. 14.
Saturday’s contest will be the first meeting between the programs as conference foes since Oklahoma joined the SEC. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. EST.
