Oklahoma Edges Vanderbilt in High-Scoring SEC Thriller
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a staggering second-half surge that nearly erased a 14-point deficit, the Vanderbilt Commodores fell just one point short against the Oklahoma Sooners in a Southeastern Conference thriller Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium. Oklahoma escaped with a 92-91 victory after surviving a frantic final sequence.
The game’s most critical phase unfolded in the final 30 seconds, a microcosm of the entire second-half drama. With Oklahoma clinging to an 88-85 lead, Vanderbilt’ Tyler Tanner, who finished with a game-high 37 points and nine assists, drained a deep 3-pointer with 5 seconds remaining to tie the game and send the home crowd of 10,892 into a frenzy.
The celebration was short-lived. On the ensuing inbounds play, Oklahoma’s Xzayvier Brown, a sophomore from Philadelphia, was fouled by Vanderbilt’s Mike James on a catch-and-shoot attempt with 3 seconds left. Brown, who scored 20 points, calmly sank both free throws to restore the Sooners’ lead.
Vanderbilt had one final chance. After a timeout to advance the ball, Tanner received the inbounds pass, dribbled to his right, and launched a contested 3-pointer from the wing as the buzzer sounded. The shot hit the rim and bounced away, sealing the heart-stopping one-point win for the visitors.
The finish was a stark contrast to the first half, which was dominated by Oklahoma. The Sooners built their lead through efficient offense and physical play inside, scoring 40 points in the paint for the game. Tae Davis was instrumental early, scoring 14 of his total 14 points in the first period as Oklahoma took a 48-34 lead into halftime. Vanderbilt struggled to find rhythm, shooting just 27 of 57 from the field for the game and committing 13 turnovers.
The second half was a complete reversal. Sparked by Tanner and fellow guard Tyler Nickel, who scored 18 points, the Commodores unleashed a 57-point half. They pushed the pace relentlessly, generating 19 fastbreak points compared to Oklahoma’s 4, and chipped away at the lead with a combination of defensive pressure and timely outside shooting, finishing 11 of 24 from 3-point range.
Oklahoma’s offense, which posted an offensive rating of 123.0 on 75 possessions, managed to keep pace just enough. Nijel Pack scored 17 points, including crucial free throws down the stretch, while Mohamed Wague added 10 points and key interior play. Dayton Forsythe contributed 12 points off the bench.
Vanderbilt’s comeback effort was also fueled by AK Okereke, who scored 13 points, and Devin McGlockton, who added 9 points. The Commodores were more effective at the free throw line, making 26 of 31 attempts, but Oklahoma’s 21-of-29 performance proved sufficient.
The loss snaps a strong run for Vanderbilt, which entered the game with a 19-4 overall record and had been installed as a 12-point favorite. The Commodores had won eight of their last nine. Oklahoma, which improved to 12-11, secured a pivotal road victory against a top-tier conference opponent, having lost five of its previous six games.
According to the Interstat ELO system, Vanderbilt had an 86.7% probability to win. The combined score of 183 points sailed over the pregame over/under line of 158.5.
Vanderbilt next travels to face Auburn on Tuesday. Oklahoma returns home to host Georgia next Saturday.
