East Tennessee State Routs Virginia Military Institute in Southern Conference Play
LEXINGTON, Va. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a decisive opening surge, the East Tennessee State Buccaneers used a blistering start to overwhelm the Virginia Military Institute Keydets 87-70 in a Southern Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Cameron Hall.
The Buccaneers, improving to 18-7 overall, seized control from the opening tip and never trailed, building a double-digit lead in the first half that proved insurmountable for the struggling Keydets, who fell to 6-19.
The most critical phase of the contest unfolded in the game’s first seven minutes. After a slow start from both sides, East Tennessee State erupted. A 3-pointer from Blake Barkley, followed by consecutive triples from Maki Johnson, fueled a 13-0 run that transformed a narrow 6-3 edge into a commanding 19-3 advantage with 13:31 remaining in the first half. The Buccaneers’ offensive efficiency during this stretch, coupled with stifling defense that forced early Virginia Military Institute misses and turnovers, effectively decided the contest before it had reached its midway point of the opening period.
Virginia Military Institute, led by Linus Holmstrom’s 20 points, struggled to find consistent offense against the taller, more physical Buccaneers. The Keydets shot just 24 of 57 from the field and committed 12 turnovers, which East Tennessee State converted into 18 points. While Tan Yildizoglu contributed 12 points and seven assists for the home team, the early deficit was too large to overcome.
East Tennessee State’s victory was anchored by a dominant performance from forward Blake Barkley. The 6-foot-7 junior from Morgantown, West Virginia, recorded a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds, controlling the paint on both ends. He was complemented by a balanced scoring attack: Cam Morris added 16 points and five rebounds, Maki Johnson scored 15, and Jordan McCullum chipped in 12.
The Buccaneers showcased superior shot-making throughout, finishing 32 of 57 from the floor, including 11 of 26 from 3-point range. Their offensive rating of 123.1 on 71 possessions underscored an efficient night. They also dominated inside, outscoring VMI 36-22 in the paint and securing 10 offensive rebounds.
Virginia Military Institute managed to trim the deficit to 11 points on several occasions in the second half, but each time East Tennessee State had an answer, often from Barkley or Morris, to stifle any sustained momentum. The Keydets’ final push came when a Holmstrom 3-pointer made it 70-58 with 3:34 to play, but the Buccaneers scored on their next two possessions to push the lead back to 16 and seal the game.
The Buccaneers, who covered the pregame spread as 14.5-point favorites, have now won three consecutive games. The total score of 157 surpassed the over/under line of 145.5. An announced crowd of 1,433 watched at Cameron Hall.
East Tennessee State will look to continue its winning ways when it hosts Chattanooga on Wednesday. Virginia Military Institute travels to face UNC Greensboro the same night.
