Saint Peter’s Edges Siena in Tight Metro Atlantic Showdown
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Interstat) — In a gritty Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference clash defined by defense and decisive plays in the final minute, Saint Peter’s held off a persistent Siena squad for a 70-65 victory on Saturday afternoon at a packed Yanitelli Center.
The Peacocks, improving to 14-8 overall, leaned on a balanced scoring attack and crucial free throws down the stretch to secure the win. The Saints, who saw a three-game winning streak snapped, fell to 17-8 despite a furious second-half rally that erased a double-digit deficit.
The game’s pivotal sequence unfolded in the closing 20 seconds with Saint Peter’s clinging to a 68-65 lead. Siena’s Gavin Doty, who led all Saints scorers with 19 points, drove hard to the basket looking to cut the deficit to one, but his layup attempt was emphatically blocked by Saint Peter’s Elijah Perkins. Perkins then secured the defensive rebound and was immediately fouled.
At the line with the outcome in the balance, Perkins calmly sank both free throws with 20 seconds remaining, pushing the Peacock lead to an insurmountable five points. Siena’s final attempt, a rushed three-pointer from Isaiah Henderson, missed as time expired, sealing the home victory.
The contest was a tale of two halves, with Saint Peter’s building its lead early. Behind the dynamic scoring of guard Bryce Eaton, who finished with a game-high 22 points, the Peacocks used a 13-0 advantage in fastbreak points to control the tempo. They took a 36-28 lead into halftime after closing the first period on a 7-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Eric Morgan.
Siena refused to capitulate. The Saints, who dominated points in the paint 36-32 and scored 13 points off turnovers compared to Saint Peter’s five, chipped away throughout the second half. The interior combination of Francis Folefac and Antonio Chandler, along with Doty’s perimeter scoring, kept constant pressure on the Peacock defense. Folefac tallied 16 points, seven assists and five rebounds, while Chandler added 12 points and two blocks.
Every time Siena drew close, Saint Peter’s found an answer. After the Saints pulled within 62-60 on a pair of Justice Shoats free throws with just over four minutes left, the Peacocks responded with an alley-oop dunk from Lucas Scroggins, set up by Zaakir Williamson, to regain a four-point cushion. Scroggins was a force on the glass, grabbing eight rebounds to go with nine points.
Siena’s last stand came in the final minute. Trailing 66-63, they forced a turnover by Williamson and had a chance to tie. But a chaotic possession ended with Doty missing a three-pointer, and Saint Peter’s Brent Bland was fouled on the rebound. Bland, who contributed 11 points and six rebounds, hit one of two free throws to make it a two-possession game, setting the stage for Perkins’ game-sealing block and free throws.
The victory was a significant one for Saint Peter’s in the MAAC standings, avenging a loss earlier in the season and halting the momentum of a Siena team that had won 10 of its last 12 games. The Peacocks’ ability to execute in transition and at the foul line in crunch time proved the difference in a game where neither team shot efficiently from the floor.
Siena, which had been installed as a narrow one-point pregame favorite, was led by Doty’s 19 points and Folefac’s all-around effort. The Saints will look to rebound when they host Quinnipiac next Friday. Saint Peter’s, which surpassed the 55.6% win probability assigned by statistical models, travels to face Sacred Heart the same night. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in Loudonville, New York, on Feb. 22.
An announced crowd of 644 at the intimate Yanitelli Center witnessed a classic MAAC battle, where the final minute, and specifically the defensive heroics of Elijah Perkins, ultimately decided a hard-fought contest.
