North Florida Outlasts Bellarmine in Overtime ASUN Shootout

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — In a game defined by breathtaking offensive efficiency and a career-defining performance, North Florida outlasted Bellarmine 117-114 in overtime in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday at UNF Arena.

The contest, a showcase for the ASUN Conference, saw both teams combine for 231 points on remarkably efficient shooting. The Ospreys, led by a masterful 33-point, 15-assist double-double from Kamrin Oriol, improved to 5-16 overall. The Knights, despite a valiant effort and 26 points from Brian Waddell, fell to 7-13.

The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the final seconds of regulation and carried into the extra period. Trailing 102-100 with under a minute to play in the second half, Bellarmine’s Sam Donald converted a driving layup while being fouled by Dalton Gayman. Donald completed the three-point play at the free-throw line to give the Knights a 103-102 lead with 31 seconds remaining.

After a North Florida turnover, Bellarmine had a chance to seal the win but missed two attempts in the final 13 seconds. North Florida’s Mason Lee secured a defensive rebound off a missed Bellarmine layup and called timeout with one second left. On the ensuing inbounds play, Lee found Kent Jackson, whose desperation three-point attempt from the wing missed, sending the game to overtime tied at 102.

The overtime period became the Kamrin Oriol show. The junior guard from St. Petersburg, Florida, scored 11 of North Florida’s 15 points in the extra frame. His most crucial contribution came with the game tied at 112. After Bellarmine’s Jack Karasinski missed a layup with 47 seconds left, North Florida held for the last shot. Oriol, isolated at the top of the key, drilled a step-back three-pointer over a defender with 19 seconds remaining to put the Ospreys ahead 115-112.

Bellarmine had a final chance to tie. Following a timeout, the Knights worked the ball to Kenyon Goodin, but his contested three-point attempt from the left wing missed with three seconds left. Oriol secured the defensive rebound, was fouled, and sank two free throws to ice the victory.

The game was an offensive clinic from the opening tip. North Florida shot a scorching 61.9% from the field (39 of 63) and 50% from three-point range (19 of 38). Bellarmine was nearly as potent, hitting 59.7% from the floor (43 of 72) and 44.4% from deep (12 of 27). Both teams were also exceptional from the free-throw line, with North Florida making 20 of 23 and Bellarmine converting 16 of 20.

Oriol’s 15 assists orchestrated the Ospreys’ attack, which posted an offensive rating of 150.1 points per 100 possessions. Kent Jackson, a hometown product from Jacksonville, provided critical support with 27 points, fueled by 7-of-13 shooting from beyond the arc. Devin Hines added 16 points off the bench.

Bellarmine’s offense, which scored 136.5 points per 100 possessions, was balanced and relentless. Waddell, a forward from Carmel, Indiana, scored his 26 points on 12-of-19 shooting. Jack Karasinski added 23 points, Sam Donald scored 22, and Tyler Doyle facilitated with 17 points and eight assists. Kenyon Goodin chipped in 18 points and six rebounds.

The Knights dominated inside, outscoring North Florida 62-40 in the paint, but the Ospreys’ three-point barrage and slight edge in fast-break points (12-6) proved decisive. North Florida also won the possession battle, committing only nine turnovers to Bellarmine’s 14.

The victory defied the pregame betting lines, which had installed Bellarmine as a 2.5-point favorite. The combined point total of 231 shattered the over/under line of 166.5. An announced crowd of 1,155 witnessed the shootout.

North Florida looks to build on the win when it hosts Stetson on Thursday. Bellarmine returns home to face West Georgia on Wednesday.
