Longhorns Overpower Bulldogs With Dominant Second Half
AUSTIN, Texas (Interstat) — A dominant second-half offensive explosion, spearheaded by a career-high scoring performance from Dailyn Swain, propelled the Texas Longhorns to an 87-67 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs in a Southeastern Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at the Frank Erwin Center.
The game, played before a crowd of 10,523, turned on a dramatic shift in efficiency after halftime. Georgia, the visiting team, entered the break with a 37-30 lead, having controlled much of the first half’s tempo. The Bulldogs’ defense had forced Texas into a disjointed offensive rhythm, and the Longhorns’ shooting was inconsistent.
That all changed irrevocably in the second period. Texas emerged from the locker room with a level of precision and aggression that Georgia could not match. The Longhorns outscored the Bulldogs 57-30 over the final 20 minutes, a staggering 27-point differential that transformed a competitive contest into a lopsided affair.
The most important part of the game was the seamless and overwhelming offensive execution Texas displayed throughout the second half. After scoring 30 points on 35 percent shooting in the first half, the Longhorns nearly doubled that output in the second, shooting a blistering 70 percent from the floor. They assisted on eight of their 20 second-half field goals and committed only five turnovers, consistently generating high-percentage shots in the paint and from beyond the arc. This sustained offensive clinic, which saw Texas score on 12 of its first 14 possessions of the half, systematically dismantled a Georgia defense that had been effective earlier.
Swain, a 6-foot-8 guard from Columbus, Ohio, was the catalyst and primary beneficiary of Texas’s offensive surge. He scored 20 of his game-high 26 points after halftime, finishing 11 of 16 from the field. His performance included a mix of explosive drives to the basket, mid-range jumpers, and timely three-pointers, showcasing the versatility that made him unguardable as the game progressed. He added six rebounds, two assists and four steals in 38 minutes, impacting the game on both ends.
He was complemented superbly by Tramon Mark of Dickinson, Texas, who contributed 23 points, six rebounds and four assists. The guard tandem consistently broke down Georgia’s defense, creating opportunities for themselves and others. Lithuanian center Matas Vokietaitis provided a strong interior presence with 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocks, capitalizing on the attention paid to Texas’s perimeter players.
Georgia, which fell to 16-4 overall, was led by Jeremiah Wilkinson’s 17 points and four assists. Somto Cyril added 12 points and five rebounds, while Jordan Ross chipped in 11 points. The Bulldogs’ offense, which had been efficient enough to build a first-half lead, stagnated against Texas’s intensified defensive pressure after the break. Georgia shot just 37.5 percent in the second half and was outscored 19-13 in points off turnovers for the game.
The statistical disparity told the story of Texas’s second-half dominance. The Longhorns finished the game shooting 58.3 percent from the field overall and outscored Georgia 38-30 in the paint. Perhaps most telling was the offensive rating metric; Texas scored 87 points on just 65 possessions for an elite rating of 134.5, while Georgia managed 67 points on 67 possessions for a rating of 100.2.
Texas, which improved to 12-8, also won the battle in key hustle categories, recording 10 steals to Georgia’s seven and converting 13 fast-break points to the Bulldogs’ seven. The victory snapped a two-game conference losing streak for the Longhorns.
The loss halted a two-game winning streak for Georgia, which had entered the contest with a 53.7 percent probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, despite Texas being a 1.5-point pregame favorite. The total score of 154 fell well under the over/under line of 170.5, largely due to the first half’s lower-scoring pace.
Both teams continue SEC play next week. Georgia returns home to face Tennessee on Tuesday night. Texas travels to face Auburn on Wednesday.
