American Edges Colgate in Patriot League Thriller
WASHINGTON (Interstat) — In a tense Patriot League clash defined by second-half surges and crucial defensive stands, the American Eagles edged the Colgate Raiders 70-66 on Wednesday night at Bender Arena.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 912, saw the Eagles overcome a three-point halftime deficit with a more efficient offensive performance down the stretch to improve to 12-8 overall. Colgate, which had won the previous meeting between the teams by two points just two weeks prior, fell to 11-9.
American’s victory was anchored by a balanced scoring attack and a decisive advantage in offensive execution. The Eagles scored 70 points on 66 possessions, an offensive rating of 106.6, while Colgate managed 66 points on 69 trips, a rating of 95.8. That efficiency gap proved critical in a game where the final margin was just four points.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, featuring seven lead changes. American guard Geoff Sprouse of Pembroke Pines, Florida, ignited the home crowd early, hitting two three-pointers in the opening minutes to help the Eagles build an initial lead. Colgate responded behind the play of Josh Ahayere of Morinville, Canada, and Jalen Cox of Los Angeles, with the Raiders taking a 34-31 lead into the break.
The second half, however, belonged to American. The Eagles opened the period on a 12-5 run, fueled by interior baskets from Julen Iturbe of Greenville, South Carolina, and Matt Mayock of Berwyn, Pennsylvania. Colgate’s offense, which shot just 5 of 18 from three-point range for the game, went cold at pivotal moments, allowing American to build its largest lead of the night at nine points with under five minutes to play.
Colgate did not relent. Cox, who finished with a game-high 21 points, spearheaded a late rally. His driving layup with 24 seconds remaining cut the American lead to 68-66, capping a 7-2 Raiders run and setting up a dramatic finish.
The most important sequence of the game followed immediately. On the ensuing inbounds play, American successfully broke Colgate’s press and found Mayock near the basket. He was fouled while scoring a layup with 34 seconds left. Mayock completed the three-point play at the free-throw line, pushing the lead back to five and effectively sealing the victory. Colgate’s final attempts from beyond the arc in the closing seconds were off the mark.
Beyond Cox’s 21 points, Colgate received 14 points from Ahayere and 13 points and a key block from forward Andrew Alekseyenko of Brookline, Massachusetts. Sam Wright of Hoover, Alabama, added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Raiders.
American countered with a more distributed effort. Madden Collins of Columbia, South Carolina, came off the bench to provide a vital spark, scoring 12 points, dishing four assists, and recording a crucial block in 22 minutes. Wyatt Nausadis of Traverse City, Michigan, and Sprouse each added 13 points, while Greg Jones of Alexandria, Virginia, contributed 10 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Mayock finished with nine points, all in the second half, including the decisive three-point play.
Statistically, the teams were close in many categories, but American’s advantages in three-point shooting (8 of 21 to Colgate’s 5 of 18), free-throw accuracy (12 of 14 to 15 of 23), and offensive rebounding (11 to 7) provided the necessary cushion. American also committed 17 turnovers but limited the damage by holding Colgate to just 12 points off those miscues.
The win moves American further up the Patriot League standings, while Colgate looks to rebound from a narrow road loss. Both teams continue conference play on Saturday, with American visiting Holy Cross and Colgate hosting Boston University.
