Holmes Powers Wofford Past Samford in Southern Conference Clash
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Interstat) — Kahmare Holmes scored 36 points and Wofford erupted for 50 points in the second half to overcome a halftime deficit and defeat Samford 88-78 in a Southern Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
The Terriers, who trailed 41-38 at the break, used a blistering offensive display after intermission to pull away, shooting 64% from the field in the final 20 minutes. The victory improved Wofford to 13-7 overall, while Samford fell to 9-11.
The most important part of the game was Wofford’s overwhelming second-half surge, fueled by Holmes and an efficient offense that consistently answered every Samford push. After a tightly contested first half that featured 10 lead changes, the Terriers opened the second period with a 9-2 run to take a 47-43 lead they would not relinquish. Samford stayed within striking distance for much of the half, closing to 71-68 with just over six minutes remaining after a 3-pointer by Kam Martin.
Wofford responded decisively. Holmes, a 6-foot-3 guard from Charlotte, North Carolina, scored on a driving layup and completed a three-point play after being fouled. Following a Samford turnover, Holmes then drew another foul and sank two more free throws, capping a personal 7-0 run in just 27 seconds to extend the lead to 78-68 with 6:13 to play. The Bulldogs never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Holmes’ performance was the cornerstone of the win. He played 37 minutes, shooting 10 of 16 from the field and a perfect 14 of 14 from the free-throw line. He added three assists and two steals. His scoring output continued a streak of strong play, following games of 20, 22 and 22 points in his previous three contests.
Jadin Booth led Samford with 27 points and three assists in 39 minutes. Dylan Faulkner added 18 points and three assists for the Bulldogs, who shot 49.2% overall but just 33.3% from 3-point range.
Wofford’s offensive execution was superior throughout, evidenced by an offensive rating of 134.6 points per 100 possessions. The Terriers shot a scorching 64% for the game (32 of 50) and dished out 18 assists against only six turnovers. Cayden Vasko facilitated the attack with 12 points and a game-high six assists, while Nils Machowski contributed 14 points.
Samford, which entered the game having lost three of its last four, struggled to contain Wofford’s interior attack. The Terriers scored 50 points in the paint and capitalized on their trips to the free-throw line, making 18 of 24 attempts. The Bulldogs managed only five assists as a team and were out-rebounded 28-22.
The game was a statistical anomaly in pace, with Samford using 67 possessions to Wofford’s 65, yet the Terriers’ remarkable efficiency rendered the Bulldogs’ offensive rating of 117.0 insufficient. Wofford’s defense also came up with key stops late, blocking four shots and recording three steals in the second half.
The announced attendance was 969.
Wofford, which was a 4-point pregame favorite, next hosts Mercer on Saturday. Samford, which has now lost four of its last five, returns home to face Chattanooga on Saturday. The teams will meet again in Birmingham, Alabama, on Feb. 11.
