Southern Utah Routs Abilene Christian in WAC Men’s Basketball
CEDAR CITY, Utah (Interstat) — A frigid offensive performance doomed Abilene Christian from the opening tip Saturday night, as the Wildcats suffered a decisive 74-52 road loss to Southern Utah in a Western Athletic Conference men’s basketball game at Centrum Arena.
The Thunderbirds, entering the contest with just five wins, dominated from the outset, building a 44-27 halftime lead and never allowing the Wildcats to mount a serious challenge in the second half. The victory improved Southern Utah’s record to 6-13 overall, while Abilene Christian fell to 10-9.
The most critical phase of the game was its start. Southern Utah seized immediate control with a 17-2 run over the first seven minutes, capitalizing on Abilene Christian’s profound shooting struggles. The Wildcats missed their first 10 field goal attempts and committed three early turnovers, allowing the Thunderbirds to establish an insurmountable cushion. Tanner Hayhurst’s 3-pointer just 58 seconds into the game set the tone, and Jaiden Feroah’s interior presence fueled the early surge.
Abilene Christian’s shooting woes defined the night. The Wildcats finished a dismal 15 for 63 from the field, a clip of 23.8 percent. They were only marginally better from beyond the arc, hitting 3 of 18. This inefficiency was starkly contrasted by Southern Utah’s balanced 28-for-58 (48.3 percent) shooting. The Thunderbirds also owned the paint, outscoring Abilene Christian 40-18.
Southern Utah was led by a formidable frontcourt duo. Isaiah Cottrell, a 6-foot-11 forward from Las Vegas, controlled the game with 13 points, four assists and four blocked shots in 28 minutes. His defensive presence anchored a Thunderbird squad that tallied seven total blocks. Jaiden Feroah, a 6-9 forward from Draper, Utah, posted a game-high 16 points and added two blocks, consistently punishing the Wildcats inside.
For Abilene Christian, only Bradyn Hubbard reached double figures, scoring 14 points. Guard Rich Smith, from the Bronx, contributed 10 points and five assists but also committed five turnovers as the Wildcats coughed the ball up 14 times. The team’s offensive rating of 68.5 points per 100 possessions underscored a night of systemic failure, while Southern Utah operated at an efficient 100.5.
Despite forcing 17 Southern Utah turnovers and generating 12 steals, Abilene Christian could not convert those opportunities into consistent scoring, managing only 13 points off takeaways. The Wildcats also struggled to capitalize on a slight edge in offensive rebounding, grabbing 13 boards on their own end.
Other key contributors for the Thunderbirds included Dylan Jones with 13 points and Tanner Hayhurst with 12. Lorenzo Abellar directed the offense effectively off the bench, dishing out five assists.
The game was a stark reversal of pregame projections, as Interstat’s ELO system had given Abilene Christian a 71.4 percent probability of victory. Instead, Southern Utah delivered one of its most complete performances of the season in front of an announced crowd of 805.
Abilene Christian will look to rebound on the road next Saturday at Tarleton State. Southern Utah continues its homestand Wednesday against Utah Valley.
