Saints Dominate First Half, Cruise Past Jaspers in MAAC Contest
NEW YORK (Interstat) — Brendan Coyle scored 23 points and Gavin Doty added 15 as Siena built a commanding early lead and never looked back in a 74-59 victory over Manhattan in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Draddy Gymnasium.
The Saints, improving to 12-7 overall, seized control with a blistering first-half offensive display, shooting 54% from the field and 58% from three-point range to take a 42-25 lead into halftime. The Jaspers, who fell to 8-12, could not overcome the early deficit despite a more competitive second half.
Siena’s offensive efficiency was the story, as the Saints scored 74 points on just 61 possessions, an elite offensive rating of 120.5. They were particularly lethal from beyond the arc, connecting on 13 of 24 attempts. Manhattan, by contrast, managed only 59 points on 64 possessions, an offensive rating of 92.6, and struggled to a 7-for-28 performance from three-point range.
The most important part of the game was Siena’s immediate and overwhelming start. The Saints opened the game on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a Coyle three-pointer just 50 seconds into the contest. Manhattan did not score until a Terrance Jones three-pointer nearly three minutes in, and by the first media timeout, Siena had established a tone of offensive precision and defensive disruption.
Coyle, a 6-foot-7 forward from Niskayuna, New York, was instrumental in building that early cushion, hitting three first-half three-pointers. His back-to-back threes late in the first half, the second assisted by Justice Shoats with 2:33 remaining, pushed Siena’s lead to 38-20 and forced a Manhattan timeout. Doty, a 6-foot-5 guard from Fulton, New York, provided consistent scoring alongside Coyle, while Shoats played a game-high 40 minutes, contributing 16 points and five assists.
Manhattan showed brief signs of life after halftime, using a 7-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 44-32 with 16:11 remaining after an Anthony Isaac layup. But Siena consistently answered every Jasper push. After Manhattan drew within 12, Coyle responded with a three-pointer on the next possession off a Christian Jones assist. Later, when a Quron Elliott three-pointer made it 51-40, Siena’s Riley Mulvey finished an emphatic dunk on the ensuing trip down the floor.
Jones led Manhattan with 17 points, and Elliott added 15. The Jaspers won the turnover battle, committing only eight to Siena’s 12, and matched the Saints with nine offensive rebounds. However, they could not offset Siena’s superior shooting. The Saints finished 30 for 57 from the field overall, while Manhattan was 22 for 59.
Siena also dominated inside, outscoring Manhattan 30-20 in the paint, and held a 10-7 advantage in points off turnovers despite committing more. The Saints’ defense, anchored by three blocks from the 7-foot Mulvey, limited Manhattan to just 37% shooting.
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for Siena in conference play, following a loss to Sacred Heart earlier in the week. Manhattan has now lost two of its last three.
Siena next hosts Fairfield on Monday night. Manhattan travels to face Quinnipiac, also on Monday.
Attendance at Draddy Gymnasium was 1,063.
