Villanova Looks to Rebound Against Marquette in Big East Clash
MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — The Villanova Wildcats aim to bounce back from their first conference loss when they visit the struggling Marquette Golden Eagles in a Big East matchup Saturday at the Bradley Center.
Villanova (12-3, 2-1 Big East) saw a seven-game win streak snapped with a 72-76 home loss to Creighton on Wednesday. The Wildcats, led by standout guard Acaden Lewis’s 20 points and seven assists in that defeat, had previously showcased a potent offense, averaging 77.1 points during their streak.
Lewis enters Saturday’s contest as the Wildcats’ engine, averaging 12.5 points and 4.8 assists per game. He is coming off a stretch of four games in which he scored 20, 12, 9 and 16 points, demonstrating consistent backcourt leadership.
Marquette (6-10, 1-2) is seeking consistency after a difficult non-conference slate. The Golden Eagles snapped a five-game skid with a narrow 66-65 home victory over Xavier on Wednesday. Guard Chase Ross, who hit the game-winning free throws against Xavier, has been a bright spot, averaging 10.2 points per game and providing defensive energy.
The Golden Eagles will need a complete performance to challenge a Villanova team that has dominated the recent series, winning the last six meetings. Marquette’s defense, allowing 74.4 points per game, will be tested by a Villanova squad that shoots 48.6% from the field.
For Villanova, re-establishing defensive intensity after allowing Creighton to shoot 50% will be a priority. For Marquette, protecting home court and building momentum after their first league win is the goal.
Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. EST Saturday. Villanova travels to Providence next Tuesday, while Marquette visits St. John’s.
