Lewis Leads Villanova to Narrow Big East Road Win

MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — In a Big East clash defined by explosive individual performances and a tense final minute, Acaden Lewis scored 20 points and orchestrated a decisive final play to lift Villanova to a 76-73 victory over Marquette on Saturday afternoon at the Bradley Center.

The Wildcats, who led for nearly the entire contest, saw a once-comfortable advantage vanish in the closing minutes before Lewis, their sophomore guard from Washington, D.C., delivered the game-winning assist. With the score tied at 73 and 11 seconds remaining, Lewis drove into the lane, drew the defense, and dished to a cutting Tyler Perkins for a layup with seven seconds left to put Villanova ahead for good.

Marquette had one final chance, but Chase Ross’s desperation three-point attempt from the wing was off the mark as time expired, securing the road win for Villanova before a crowd of 15,342.

The game was a showcase for two of the conference’s premier guards. While Lewis controlled the tempo for Villanova with 20 points and eight assists, Marquette’s Nigel James put on a spectacular scoring display, pouring in a game-high 31 points on 11-of-31 shooting, including five three-pointers. James, a sophomore from Huntington, New York, nearly willed the Golden Eagles to an improbable comeback, scoring 12 points in the final 7:39.

Villanova established its dominance early, using a 13-2 run to build a 23-10 lead midway through the first half. The Wildcats were efficient and balanced, shooting 55.4 percent from the field for the game and scoring 40 points in the paint. Matthew Hodge of Belmar, New Jersey, hit three first-half three-pointers and finished with 14 points and five rebounds, while Duke Brennan of Chandler, Arizona, added 12 points. Devin Askew provided a critical spark off the bench with 13 points and six rebounds.

Despite Villanova’s control, Marquette hung around largely due to James’s heroics and a 16-4 advantage in points off turnovers. The Wildcats led 44-38 at halftime and maintained a lead between six and ten points for much of the second half.

The turning point came late. After a Perkins jumper gave Villanova a 71-65 lead with 3:25 to play, James answered with a layup. Following a Villanova turnover, James found Royce Parham for a layup to cut the deficit to 71-69. Parham, who finished with 17 points, then tied the game at 73 on another assist from James with 1:28 remaining.

Both teams traded empty possessions, setting the stage for the final sequence. Villanova called a timeout with 24 seconds left, designing the play that ended with Perkins’s layup off Lewis’s drive-and-dish.

Defensively, Villanova managed to contain Marquette’s offense outside of James, holding the Golden Eagles to 43.9 percent shooting. The Wildcats also won the battle on the glass, out-rebounding Marquette 32-28. Marquette’s Chase Ross contributed eight points, four rebounds, four assists and two blocks in the loss.

With the win, Villanova improved to 13-3 overall and 3-1 in the Big East, bouncing back from a home loss to Creighton earlier in the week. Marquette, which was coming off a narrow win over Xavier, fell to 6-11 and 1-3 in conference play.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably the final 90 seconds, which transformed from a potential Marquette comeback story into a testament to Villanova’s poise. After James and Parham erased a six-point deficit to tie the game, the pressure shifted entirely to the visiting Wildcats. Instead of forcing a contested shot, Villanova executed under pressure. Lewis, who had committed a costly turnover just minutes earlier, demonstrated maturity by penetrating and creating for Perkins, a fellow sophomore, for the high-percentage game-winning basket. This sequence, following Marquette’s emotional rally, solidified the victory and highlighted the clutch execution that has become a hallmark of Villanova basketball.

Villanova next travels to face Providence on Tuesday night. Marquette will head to New York to take on St. John’s, also on Tuesday.
