Providence at Xavier
Preview: Providence Friars at Xavier Musketeers
CINCINNATI (Interstat) — Two Big East teams looking to steady their conference trajectories will meet Saturday when the Providence Friars visit the Xavier Musketeers at Cintas Center.
Providence (8-7, 1-1 Big East) arrives after a draining 103-98 overtime loss to Connecticut on Wednesday. The Friars showed resilience in that defeat, led by 19 points from sophomore guard Ryan Mela. Mela, averaging 11.5 points, has been a key offensive spark, scoring in double figures in three of his last five games.
Xavier (9-7, 1-2) is also seeking to rebound from a narrow conference road loss, falling 66-65 at Marquette on Wednesday. The Musketeers have dropped three straight, all against ranked opponents. Their fortunes hinge heavily on junior guard Malik Messina-Moore, who is averaging 16.8 points and 3.5 assists over his last five contests. He scored 22 points in the loss at Marquette.
Both teams have faced challenging early conference slates. The Friars’ overtime battle with UConn followed a 77-71 win at Saint John’s on Jan. 3. Xavier’s recent skid includes losses to the Golden Eagles, DePaul and the Huskies.
Historically, games between these programs are tightly contested. The home court has provided a slight edge in recent matchups, a factor Xavier hopes continues as it looks to climb above .500 in league play.
For Providence, containing Messina-Moore will be a primary defensive focus, while Xavier must account for Mela’s scoring burst and the interior presence of Jamier Jones, who added 18 points against UConn.
The outcome could pivot on which team better manages late-game execution after both suffered close losses earlier this week. A win would provide valuable momentum heading into the heart of the Big East schedule.
Tip-off is set for Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026, in Cincinnati.
