Mercer Outguns Wofford in High-Scoring Southern Conference Affair

MACON, Ga. (Interstat) — In a Southern Conference offensive showcase defined by remarkable efficiency and a relentless pace, the Mercer Bears outgunned the Wofford Terriers 109-97 in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday at Hawkins Arena.

The contest, which saw both teams combine for a staggering 206 points, was ultimately decided by Mercer’s superior shot-making and ability to capitalize in transition. The Bears shot a blistering 63.6% from the field, including 12 of 19 from three-point range, and converted 27 of 31 free throws. Wofford, despite shooting 50% from beyond the arc itself, could not keep pace with Mercer’s offensive firepower, which produced a 143.9 offensive rating on 76 possessions.

The game’s most critical phase came early, as Mercer established a commanding lead that Wofford spent the entire evening trying to overcome. After Wofford’s Nils Machowski opened the scoring with a three-pointer, Mercer responded with a devastating 17-2 run. The Bears’ offense was a model of precision, with Baraka Okojie and Kyle Cuffe combining for quick scores, while Armani Mighty provided an imposing interior presence. Mercer’s lead ballooned to 12 points just over three minutes into the game and never dipped below double digits after the 16-minute mark of the first half.

Wofford, led by a heroic individual effort from Machowski, consistently threatened to mount a comeback. The junior guard from Berlin, Germany, poured in 33 points, including six three-pointers, and added five rebounds and five assists. His backcourt mate, Kahmare Holmes, contributed 22 points and eight rebounds. Every time the Terriers strung together a few baskets, however, Mercer had an answer, often in the form of a transition score. The Bears dominated fast-break points 31-8, a testament to their defensive activity and opportunistic offense.

Mercer’s backcourt duo of Okojie and Cuffe proved unstoppable. Okojie, the top star for the Bears, orchestrated the offense with 12 assists while also scoring 29 points on efficient 9-of-14 shooting. His command of the game in the second half, particularly in drawing fouls and converting at the line, helped Mercer maintain a comfortable cushion. Cuffe provided a massive spark off the bench with 19 points, all in the first half, on 7-of-10 shooting to help build the initial lead.

Inside, Armani Mighty recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, anchoring the paint for Mercer. His size and activity limited Wofford to just 28 points in the paint compared to Mercer’s 44. Brady Shoulders added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Bears, while Zaire Williams chipped in eight points and six assists.

For Wofford, Cayden Vasko supported Machowski and Holmes with 18 points, and Chace Watley added 15 off the bench. The Terriers shot well overall, hitting 16 of 32 from deep and 77.3% from the free-throw line, but were undone by Mercer’s historically efficient offensive performance and their own 12 turnovers, which led to 19 Mercer points.

The victory improved Mercer’s season record to 10-7 overall. The Bears, who had been installed as a 5-point pregame favorite, next travel to face the Virginia Military Institute on Thursday. Wofford, which fell to 11-6, saw a three-game winning streak snapped. The Terriers, who were given a 56.2% probability to win by statistical models, will host Chattanooga on Wednesday. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on Jan. 24.

Attendance at Hawkins Arena was 1,258. The total score of 206 points sailed over the pregame over/under line of 153.5.
