Florida Gulf Coast at North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. (Interstat) — Two ASUN Conference men’s basketball teams seeking momentum will meet Saturday when North Alabama hosts Florida Gulf Coast at Flowers Hall.

The Lions (5-7) and Eagles (6-8) both enter on losing streaks following narrow defeats in their conference openers on Thursday. North Alabama fell 70-67 to Stetson at home, while Florida Gulf Coast dropped an 83-85 road decision at Central Arkansas.

Saturday’s matchup features a compelling duel between two of the league’s top scorers. Florida Gulf Coast will lean on guard JR Konieczny, who is coming off a dynamic 25-point, four-rebound, four-assist performance in the loss to Central Arkansas. Over his last five meaningful outings, the standout has averaged 16.6 points.

North Alabama counters with guard Donte Bacchus, who poured in 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds against Stetson. He has been a consistent offensive force, scoring in double figures in three straight games.

The Eagles have shown a potent offense at times, averaging 78.2 points per game, but have struggled defensively, allowing 78.6. Their recent 84-43 rout of Fort Lauderdale showcased their potential, but losses to UCF, New Mexico and Florida Atlantic highlight their inconsistency.

The Lions have faced a challenging non-conference slate, including road games at Clemson and San Francisco, which they won 65-63. Their defense has been more reliable than FGCU’s, conceding 73.3 points per game, but scoring droughts have been an issue, as seen in a 57-point outing at Loyola Marymount.

Historically, the series has been tight, adding another layer to this early conference clash. Both teams will view this as a critical opportunity to steer their seasons back on track before a grueling January schedule.

For North Alabama, the game begins a two-game homestand before hitting the road for four of their next five. Florida Gulf Coast continues a stretch with four of its first five ASUN games away from home.

Tipoff is set for Saturday afternoon in Florence.
