Eagles Dominate Lions in ASUN Conference Matchup
FLORENCE, Ala. (Interstat) — The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles snapped a two-game skid and secured a critical road victory in ASUN Conference play on Saturday, defeating the North Alabama Lions 72-55 at Flowers Hall.
The game, played before a crowd of 2,534, was defined by a dominant defensive performance from the visiting Eagles, who held the Lions to a frigid 30.8% shooting from the field. North Alabama’s offensive struggles were encapsulated by a 77.7 offensive rating on 71 possessions, a figure that proved insurmountable against a more efficient Florida Gulf Coast attack.
The tone was set early. After North Alabama’s Kevin de Kovachich split a pair of free throws for the game’s first point, Florida Gulf Coast seized control with a 10-0 run. The Eagles’ defense was stifling from the opening tip, forcing the Lions into a series of missed shots and turnovers. North Alabama went nearly five minutes without a field goal until a Donte Bacchus layup at the 14:30 mark.
Florida Gulf Coast’s lead ballooned to 15 points late in the first half following a 3-pointer from Rory Stewart, making it 33-18. The Lions managed a small rally before the break, capped by a Canin Jefferson layup and free throw, to trim the deficit to 33-23 at halftime. The Eagles held North Alabama to just 23 first-half points on 7-of-27 shooting.
Any hopes of a North Alabama comeback were quickly extinguished in the second half. Florida Gulf Coast opened the period with an emphatic alley-oop from Michael Duax to Isaiah Malone, sparking a 7-2 run that pushed the lead back to 15. The Lions never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way. The Eagles methodically extended their advantage, leading by as many as 19 points before settling on the 17-point final margin.
The most important sequence of the game came early in the second half, solidifying Florida Gulf Coast’s command. After North Alabama’s de Kovachich converted a three-point play to cut the lead to 30-27 with 16:29 remaining, the Eagles responded with decisive force. On the ensuing possession, Rahmir Barno hit a tough jump shot. Following a defensive stop, Jordan Ellerbee drew a foul and made a free throw. Then, after another Lions miss, J.R. Konieczny found Stewart for a 3-pointer. In just over a minute of play, the Eagles engineered a 6-0 run to stretch the lead back to nine points and effectively halt North Alabama’s momentum for good.
Isaiah Malone led Florida Gulf Coast with a team-high 11 points and eight rebounds in just 22 minutes, providing crucial interior presence. Rahmir Barno added 14 points, five assists and four rebounds, directing the offense for 35 minutes. Jordan Ellerbee contributed 13 points and four rebounds off the bench, while JR Konieczny finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
For North Alabama, Donte Bacchus recorded a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds in 37 minutes. Canin Jefferson also scored 14 points, and DarKaun King added 11. However, the Lions were hampered by poor perimeter shooting, connecting on only 5 of 21 attempts from 3-point range.
Statistically, the Eagles won despite committing 13 turnovers to North Alabama’s nine and tallying only six assists. They compensated with superior shooting (46.7% to 30.8%) and a significant advantage on the offensive glass, securing six offensive rebounds to the Lions’ three, leading to 11 second-chance points.
With the victory, Florida Gulf Coast improves to 7-8 overall and 1-1 in the ASUN. North Alabama falls to 5-8 and 0-2 in conference play. The Eagles will look to build on the win when they return home to host Austin Peay on Thursday. The Lions hit the road for their next contest, traveling to face Eastern Kentucky on Thursday.
