Eagles Edge Cougars in OVC Thriller on Late Free Throw
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (Interstat) — In a game defined by razor-thin margins and a frantic final sequence, Jon Carroll’s defensive heroics sealed a dramatic 73-72 road victory for Morehead State over SIU Edwardsville in an Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball clash Saturday at the Vadalabene Center.
The Eagles, who improved to 7-8 overall, squandered a late six-point lead but survived when Carroll, a 6-foot-7 forward, blocked CJ Hall’s potential game-winning layup as time expired. The Cougars, who fell to 9-6, had one final possession after a turnover by Morehead State’s Davion Cunningham with seven seconds left, but Carroll swatted away the attempt to preserve the win.
The contest was a tense, back-and-forth affair featuring 10 lead changes and neither team leading by more than seven points. Morehead State held a 33-35 halftime deficit but used a more efficient offensive performance after the break to claw ahead. The Eagles shot 53.2% from the field for the game, compared to 44.1% for SIU Edwardsville, and made 17 of 22 free throws to offset committing 14 turnovers.
Carroll was instrumental on both ends, finishing with 17 points, three assists and three blocks in 26 minutes, including the game-saving rejection. His frontcourt mate, Chase Dawson, added 17 points. For SIU Edwardsville, Darrion Baker led the way with 15 points, while Arnas Sakenis contributed 13 points and fellow big man Jo Valrie anchored the paint defensively.
The decisive final minute encapsulated the game’s volatility. Morehead State appeared to take control when George Marshall hit a 3-pointer off a Chase Dawson assist with 47 seconds remaining, giving the Eagles a 73-71 lead. SIU Edwardsville’s Jack Campion was fouled on the ensuing possession and made the first of two free throws with eight seconds left. He missed the second, but a loose ball foul on Marshall sent the Cougars’ Darius Robinson to the line for two shots with a chance to take the lead.
Robinson missed the first and made the second to tie the game at 72. On the inbound, Cunningham stepped out of bounds, handing SIU Edwardsville the ball under its own basket with 7.1 seconds on the clock. After a timeout, the Cougars ran a play for Hall, who drove the left side of the lane, only to have his shot emphatically denied by Carroll at the rim as the horn sounded.
The outcome defied the pregame analytics, as statistical models heavily favored the home team. It also marked a bounce-back for Morehead State, which had lost at Lindenwood two days prior, while halting SIU Edwardsville’s two-game conference win streak.
Beyond the final play, the game was won in the trenches and in transition. Morehead State dominated points in the paint, 34-28, and outscored SIU Edwardsville 15-7 on fast breaks. The Cougars kept pace by forcing 16 points off Eagles turnovers and hitting eight 3-pointers, but ultimately came up one possession short.
Morehead State returns home to face Tennessee-Martin on Thursday. SIU Edwardsville will look to regroup quickly, hosting Lindenwood on Tuesday. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in Kentucky on Jan. 29.
